Best CPU for first build?

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

I have a quick question. Is the Pentium even worth getting if you're not planning to overclock? I do eventually want to upgrade to an i5 or better, so it sounds like something good to hold me until then.

No. It's pretty much a pointless CPU to get if you're not planning to overclock, and it's not a good choice even if you do overclock it. Get an i3.

OK, please excuse me if I'm doing this wrong, I'm pretty new to these forums. I'm planning a budget first build. I'm set on everything, but the CPU has stumped me. I don't want to over clock, due to it being my first build and I literally cannot afford to screw it up. I was thinking about the AMD FX 6300. Thoughts? Oh, and if you want, feel free to suggest a good budget MOBO to go with it. I'm on mobile so excuse my formatting and lack of PC Part Picker link. I'm at my grandmother's for thanksgiving and other than my phone & iPad, I'm living entirely in pre 2000's tech.

If you're gaming then an i3 will be better then an FX6.

I think he should go for the pentium then save up money for an i5

The 6300 is good, however, unless you live near a microcenter, where there combo deals with it is so stupid its hard to pass up, I really can't suggest it. An i3 would be better, and allows a more prevelent upgrade path.

(Owner of 6300, microcenter deals, nothing beat it at my price range)

A good cheap mobo that will last you till your new processor is an MSI h81 m p33/e33, or an ASUS h81 m K/e (plus)

fx 6300 - sapphire dual x r9 270x - Zalman z9 - Evga 500B - Cooler master hyper TX3 - Win. 8.1 - Asrock 970 extreme 3 r2.0 - Crucial ballstix sport 8gb (2x4) - WD blue 1TB - some random optical drive for 11$

no, even highly overclocked it cant match a core i3 in modern games, forget about it.
