Can you use AMD gpu without catalyst software?

Go to solution Solved by deathjester,

Alright got cha. so this is how Im going to do this

1. download DDU in normal mode

2. restart and go into safe mode

3. use DDU in safe mode then use the option for graphics cards

4. while computer is turned off, open up chassis and replace old gpu with new gpu

5. boot up normal mode and go to nvidia's website to download latest drivers

6. celebrate ?

Exactly :).

Should never have to use it again, unless you switch again. DDU is just something you do when switching brands between Nvidia/AMD. A lot of people will just end up re installing the OS when they run into problems, which is a huge hassle. DDU does the same thing :).

Hey all, I'm currently using an HD 7450 gpu. I will be replacing it with a GTX 750 so I'll need to unistall old AMD drivers first, right? I've been trying to look for amd drivers to unistall such as the Catalyst but I'm unable to find them. Is this normal?

Go to safe mode. Run this.

Uninstall Catalyst Install Manager or something like that, then download 1 AMD driver and select Uninstall when the installer launches.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

When there is no danger of failure there is no pleasure in success.

Yep, Catalyst is what you will be uninstalling. Only uninstall them when you are ready though, so probably right before you remove your old GPU. You should be able to find catalyst under Control Pannel -> Uninstall a Program.

Can't find any program in my Control panel with "AMD" in it

If you right click on your desktop does Catalyst show up in the list? I'm thinking that Catalyst wasn't even installed since Windows has a built in driver that works(sort of).

Right clicking on desktop does not bring up Catalyst

So am I ready to remove my old gpu and installing my new gpu?

Also should I already have my new gpu's driver installed before I install the graphics card?

Seriously just run Display Driver uninstaller. It is a much better option than removing just the driver anyways. It will clean registry and the HD of everything related to AMD/Nvidia, and would do the same if you were switching from Nvidia to AMD.

Boot into safe mode (hold down f8 when computer boots). Run the program (download newest version and stick a shortcut on ur dekstop before doing this so you can just click the thing).

Choose AMD. Check where I put a big red check mark, then choose the option I circled.

When computer is off, switch card. Install new cards drivers. Easy as that. Will be like installing the card on a fresh install of windows.

It sounds like Catalyst or any form of 3rd party driver wasn't installed, so it will probably be safe to remove your old GPU. For your GTX 750, install the drivers after the card is installed. Nvidia will only allow the driver installation if the hardware is present.

A lot of things require safe mode to get the job done right. You CAN do it outside of Safe mode and it will PROBABLY remove every single thing. Safe mode just assures it. If you have never entered safe mode?

It is just a basic windows running without all the startup crap, with a horrible resolution that looks like crap. That is why I said just throw a shortcut to display driver uninstaller on your desktop. Click it, follow instructions i posted and you are done. Computer will shut off. Install the new card, install new drivers and remove display driver uninstaller. You don't need it anymore.

Just hammer the F8 key at boot to enter safemode. You also have to go to safemode to remove some especially nasty viruses sometimes. That is why it is there. :)

Hey I was just reading up on using DDU method which you've stated, do I need to get safemsi? I've never used safe mode before and safemsi is supposedly to allow you install .exe while in safe mode?

Nope only need to go into safe mode to remove stuff. Install the drivers for the new card in normal windows.
