Seagate Barracuda vs Western Digital

Adorza

Would the Seagate Barracuda 3TB or the Western Digital 2TB for video editting?

It seems WD drives have lower failure rates then Seagate.

@Aniallation Thanks for posting that! Very interesting. Since both hdd companies are huge it would be interesting if it could be isolated which factory the drives came from. Seagate had an issue a year ago with the 'cudas when one Chinese factory of the three that were making it was far worse and accounted for a lot of the failures. It was a lottery if you got a "good" drive or the crappy one.

I've never had a single drive from WD or Seagate fail.  They come with warranties if something were to crap out so you can get it replaced, the failure rate is low enough to not really worry about if it's just for personal use.  You should be backing up your data anyway, so even if a drive fails then it isn't the end of the world.  I currently run 5 Seagate 3tb drives in Raid 10 + hotspare, for the same price I could have gotten 5 2tb WD drives.  I'd take the better priced one in $/gb.

The Black performs slightly better and has a longer warranty but isn't better than the larger capacity imo.

The article is really skewed due to the batches that were tested and should be taken with a mountain of salt. http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/6028/dispelling-backblaze-s-hdd-reliability-myth-the-real-story-covered/index.html

@WoodenMarker But this article is later than the Jan/14 article that Tweaktown references. Yes, it's still backblaze, but it's later info too. It's too bad that one of the giants doesn't chime in with their experiences. You know that Google, Yahoo and MS have some stories to tell from their fields of drives.

The majority of the Tweaktown article still applies.

Hey Adorza,

Video editing puts a drive under a lot of pressure, working with big files, streaming, etc.
What I can say about WD Black is that it was designed for heavier workloads (such as video editing). It is fine tuned especially for performance and has a additional dual-core processor built-in that provides twice the processing power. That, alongside the long warranty and the other features makes the WD Black a great drive that would be sufficient enough for video editing. You can read a bit more in the drive's spreadsheet here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf.
If capacity is not critical, I could suggest checking also WD VelociRaptor, which is a 10,000 rpm drive that offers ever greater speeds and performs even better at video editing. Here's a link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20.

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
