3 pin case fan with a 4 pin motherboard

Willy156

Hi all,  my previous computer's motherboard and case fan were 3 pin connectors. however my new motherboard is now 4 pins. is it normal for my 3 pin case fan to go really loud after installing it onto my 4 pin motherboard? my 3 pin case fan was really quiet with my 3 pin motherboard, but now it's really loud on my 4 pin motherboard.

Yeah its normal, you can use a 3-pin fan on a 4-pin headers :)

Try changing the fan or using a PWM fan for better control

you have to set up the speed control on the board. your issue doesn't have anything to do with the pins on the fan connector.

Also, it's the same thing if you plug in a 3 pin fan to a 4 pin motherboard. :P

If you use Asus motherboards they come with fan expert 3 which helps you control your fans through their software, dont know about other mobos.

Okay so my motherboard is compatible with fan xpert, now I just need to download Fan Xpert 3 and I'll be able to control my fan?

Yup, download Asus Suite II for your motherboard and you'll find Fan Xpert 2

Alright so I've downloaded the Suite 2. http://puu.sh/d7cto/5ece07465e.png So here is AISuite2>FanXpert>AppSetup. do I only need to run Setup?

Setup will automatically setup the fans for you, give it a try and see if you like the settings.

If not, you can change the parameters yourself

Darn, basically do I need to run Setup in the AISuite2 folder before I run setup in the fanExpert folder? Because running fanExpert by itself is doing nothing

No, install the whole app and then open Fan Xpert from the app itself

It shouldn't matter that much. Its just newer version that might not be available for your mobo.

Another thought. If you want fans running constantly slower, consider getting voltage reducers between fan and mobo.
