Not detecting HDDs

Go to solution Solved by Techpumpkin_WD,
Hello,

You can test if a different OS than Windows can detect the drives and maybe test with a different PC. Also try to upgrade your motherboard SATA controller drivers. Another thing that might help is to disable Fast Startup if you are using Windows 8 or 8.1.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Hi There,

I have not been able to detect my 2x 4TB HDDs on my pc.

I see them in my bios and in device manager but they do not show up in disk management even after re-scanning my drives in disk management.

I have tried to uninstall from device manager and rescan for hardware changes but whenever I uninstall, a 4TB HDD it says I need to restart to complete the uninstallation. If I do not restart and instead choose to scan for hardware changes, it does NOT come back... Only when i restart does it show back up.

I have tried disk management, but no matter what I do the drives do not show up in disk management and I have tried to re-scan the drives to get them to show up but to no avail. However my main bootable drive does have 2 partitions for some reasons.

I have tried reattaching the cables for the HDD's to different SATA ports....The only thing I haven't tried is to put it into the SATA Express.......

Also I have tried to boot from the HDD's with windows 8.1 cd in the drive, but all it does is show the light blue windows logo on a black screen with the loading and symbol and take me directly to recovery options......

All the cables are connected correctly and securely........

Don't know what else to do..... as the drives do show up in both the BIOS correctly and the Device Manager.....

Oh one last thing, in the Device Manager on the HDDs' properties whenever I click on the Volumes Tab and then Click populate, it gives the error saying "Volume information for the disk cannot be found"

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to fix this problem I'm all ears....

If they're seagate drives and since they're over 1TB you may need to install SeaTools for windows or something like that to get them working with new drivers etc. Also this would explain your "Volume information for the disk cannot be found" error because Windows doesn't have the correct drivers to check what the drives are.

No they're 4TB WD Green Drives.

I have been looking for drivers for the SATA controller and for the WD Geen drives, but I haven't found any that worked so far.

You're going to need to assign them a drive letter if one isn't assigned.

Hi,

Firstly,  disconnect and reconnect the drives. You never know...

Secondly, try them on another SATA motherboard header, some SATA headers use different controllers so if one of the controllers (namely 3rd party not chipset) is not behaving this could solve it. Consult your manual for what headers to use.

Thirdly, use the DISKPART utility. It runs in command prompt (CMD window). Please visit : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc766465%28v=ws.10%29.aspx that gives you a break down of the commands.

Using DISKPART I have got drives to work after they decided to drop off the radar !!

Keep us posted.

Regards

Ed

Hi Ed,

I have already tried to use DISKPART with the list volume command and the list disk command but it only detects my bootable ssd.

I have already disconnected and reconnected the drives to different SATA ports but it did nothing. The only thing I haven't done is connect it to the SATA Express Ports on the Mobo.

The only thing I could think of now to do is to update the BIOS and see if that sovles this problem.

Thanks for the advice though.

Boot up into linux and try to configure the drives there if all else fails. This is because linux is much less annoying when it comes to drives and stuff
