That doesn't matter, two 980s will perform significantly better in every game, a 970 is around the same as a 290/x and the 980 is around 20% faster.

It isn't around 20% faster just as a heads up.

Please don't turn this post into a flame war. He was just stating something to compare the price to, not to hate on nvidia.

I was just stating a fact, for gaming, dual 980s is vastly superior unless you are using mini itx, where the 295x2 has a chance to not be much worse.

Sure Two Sapphire R9-290 TriX OC  costing $500,-

Thats cheaper then a single GTX980, But a 290 xfire will blow a GTX980 out of the water, in games that are optimized to work with crossfire and sli setups.

So yeah how about that?

Same story that two R9-290x cards are cheaper then a R9-295X2, for nearly the same performance.

You'd be surprised at how little there is between two 980s and a 295x2:

These are the two resolutions that you'd be wanting a 295x2 or a pair of 980s in. Not to mention right now in the UK it's possible to get two 290x's for about the same price as a single 980, (~£450) and a 295x2 for a little more (£480).

If you  look up the 970 SLI charts you'd also see at 5760x1080p and 4k the 295x2 wins.

That may have been before the 900 series got a significant boost from drivers because the 980 is pretty close to the 780 ti there. AMD GPUs generally perform better at higher resolutions so the 980 would be more ahead at 1080p or 2.5k. If the price difference is that big in your country, the 290x is the obvious choice, but in the usa it isn't that far. The 970 is much better in general because of pricing.

Well I'm feeling some buyers remorse, here now a 290 is £200-220, the cheapest 290x's £225, and my 970 was £300, my intended resolution one day being 5760x1080 and the 970s overall performing worse. I'd have been better off waiting and getting a pair of 290s or a 295x2. Plus I've not noticed a significant boost from drivers at all.

Also, there's no point in discussing the differences between sli 980s and a 295x2 at 1080p because both will in the real world be the same - 60fps minimum.

Anyway, the reason the AMD GPUs perform better is because as per usual Nvidia bottleneck their own products - this time round it's with the 256bit bus. That's why at high resolutions the 780ti pulls ahead of the 970 and closes in on the 980.
