Speaking between my missus and her mother about computers.

My lady wants to buy this touch screen laptop crap from seeing an advert on TV, i just said it's gimmicky crap..

She replies it is my money and i want it.. ok...

I said which would you rather have? a £1300 desktop with miles faster performance, or a touch screen?

Her mum came out with "desktops are out of date and you cannot buy them in a shop".

I just stayed quiet...

i dont blame then, say my mother and father are just sad when it comes to technology, when i told them i was building my own PC they replied: "how are you gonna build a laptop" and said "well no, that would be stupid i wanna build a desktop"

they just thought desktops were old and useless

And given her mum's needs they probably are obsolete. A desktop only makes sense in specific situations now, and they are when you need performance, and when you need comfort. A big monitor and a mechanical keyboard are always going to be far better for productivity than a laptop, but in most other situations a desktop isn't really necessary for that kind of user.

She games...

In that case... She could get a good gaming pc for 900£ and still have enough money for a pretty good 10'' laptop..

This is almost inevitably going to lead to: 'the laptop's slow, let me use your pc all the time' :D

Sorry, hun, you insisted on getting a laptop, now you're stuck with it.
