Hey guys, I want to overclock my i7-4790k for my next build. And I was wondering, do I need to clean off pre-applied therml paste to put on arctic silver?

If so, what do I need to do it?

you dont need to clean it off, it is just fine but if you want to you fist take a plastic knife and scrape it off and then use isopropyl acohol with toilet paper to get the rest off

Isopropyl alcohol 99% (I used 70% on mine when I cleaned it off) Also if you're going to buy a liquid cooler, most come with pre-applied thermal paste

Yes. Clean it off. It's recommended that you use 99% Isotropic alcohol with something lint free(coffee filters work).

What cooler do you have?
You only need to reapply thermal paste if you remove or swap coolers.

Also, dont use AS5, MX4 or NH-T1 is much better.

Planning on getting the H105

Yeah you don't need to buy a thermal paste (well you might if you mess up mounting the cooler, but just don't mess it up) H105 comes with a pre-applied one

Planning on getting the H105

Then yes you need to clean off the old thermal paste from the CPU using a cloth with a bit of alcohol.

The H105 already has thermal paste preinstalled, but if you want a bit better performance you can buy MX-4 or NH-T1 and clean off the preapplied thermal paste from the H105 and apply the MX-4/NH-T1 you bought.
