So there was a time when I was pretty sure general consensus was that these headphones were about the best you could get in that pricing bracket. Is that still the case, or is there something else I should be looking into?

Can currently get them there on Amazon for $85. $100 is about my maximum budget.

Main use would be for music and some solo gaming. I have a headset I use when playing games most of the time. Looking for relatively budget-friendly, comfortable circumaurals.

"A picture is starting to form here... I wonder if it's accurate? Some pieces don't quite seem to fit. Or maybe I just don't like the way it looks."

They sound great (at least people say so, i've never tried those myself) but i bet they are not that comfortable for gaming. Also people complain about the earpads, which wear out way to easily.
Are they bad headphones? Hell no! However they are good for the pros, which means the coiled cable might annoy you and they are not that comfortable for 4-5+ hours, but sound-quality-wise they are awesome.
You should also check the HD558 . I believe they are great all-around headphones and i believe they are much more comfortable.
