My WD Caviar Black just stopped working... Hasn't been 3 months.

Oof... Looks like it could be pretty annoying..

For me I think it was ~$9 US shipped UPS. Though with all that customs stuff, who knows. And I'm not sure if they do data recovery, but someone local to you could probably do it; if it's even recoverable. I got lucky because I hadn't put anything of real importance on it yet. I had the same symptoms that you're describing.

That is truely disgraceful if I have to pay for customs and the shipping cost cost the same as a new HDD.

Hi there,

Fortunately there is a shipment address for UK and Ireland http://goo.gl/nCywa9

I hope that this would at least save the trouble of dealing with the customs.

WD don't offer data recovery services, but they do have a list of data recovery companies partners http://goo.gl/oCuoJn You can use any data recovery service you like, as long as they present you with a written verification that they performed data recovery on this drive. This is needed in order to retain the warranty status.

Before the RMA is best to contact the support team and they will give you full instructions for your region. You can find all the contact details here: http://goo.gl/deh2Rv

Hope that helps.

I suggest to get one kind of this thing if you haven't RMA it.

HDD enclosure : http://www.amazon.ca/HDE-Inch-Sata-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B002ZGAON0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416561862&sr=8-2&keywords=hdd+enclosure+3.5

*get the cheap one

Then take the HDD out and plug to another PC via USB just to recover the data. Hopefully the issue is not with the HDD.
