One Build - Two Questions

Go to solution Solved by KamiKatze,

Hi there, for some reason i didn't get emails about your posts, so i didn't notice.

I was trying to give people an idea of my skill level, so that they wouldn't need to try to dumn thing down

It just seems to me that the power throughput of a 6+2 ping plugging to a 8+6 pin doesn't work, that's just my reasoning, but it's probably incorrect, which is why i turned to the LTT forums, because the people here are great.

I haven't found anything in my research. I was hoping someone else would have a 780 (not much to ask for)

I'm afraid you didn't read my post. the PSU has a 6+2 pin, and the adaptor is supposed to end with an 8+6 into the GPU, that's all i know.

I'm buying for the 780 for 250AUD from someone i know. A lot cheaper than a 970.

I did read it but i didn't quite understand it then. Or i still don't understand it (?)

You need to hook up two seperate cables to the GPU, you can't split one 6+2 pin cable with an adapter. Too much current going through one cable.

If you're having too few PCIe power cables you can just use a molex to 6 pin adapter on a seperate molex-harness.

Hi there,

So i'm upgrading a PC, don't worry, i'm experienced.

Build is linked below.

My questions are as followed:

1) The Gigabyte GTX 780 requires an 8pin and a 6pin pcie connector. The power supply has a 6+2 pin connector. Aparently the GPU comes with an adaptor.

Will the adaptor just go from the 6+2 PSU cable to the GPU, and will that work?

2) If you guys notice any problems with the build, please let me know about that too

Note: The RAM shown isn't exactly the same as what i have

thanks in advance!

Forgive me, i promise i'm not trying to sound rude, but by asking that question you don't sound very " expierenced " do some research and i'm sure you will figure it out.

Quick answer: 6+2 Pin = 8 pin.

Also: why a 780 and not a 970? That price looks horrible. :D

So you're saying that i can't plug this 6+2 off the PSU into the adaptor, then plug the 8 & 6 from there into the 780?

Update: So the website i had been reading the specs off seems to have been giving me some false info. Aparently the PSU has 4 x 6+2 pin connectors, so that's fine, case closed guys.

No problems with the build that i might have missed?

That's more like it.

If you're buying new, why don't you go with the latest Intel Chip? Or are those again super expensive in AUS? Also  WD blacks are a waste of money if you have a boot SSD imo. You could leave one HDD black if you want for all the games but put y WD green in for mass storage (movies etc.) Other than that it looks solid, allthough you don't need 8 GB RAM for gaming but on the other hand 16 GB is a valid choice imo. :D

I'm upgrading. I probably should have mentioned bits i'm upgrading

780 is an upgrade.

new PSU, case and fans

The PC is pretty old. I didn't build it. I would never have put this build together for gaming. So you're completely right, but i can't do anything about it, and it isn't my fault :)

As for prices. They aren't that expensive compared to every other thing in Aus. Every kind of PC hardware is expensive here.

Naw, it's okay. If you have that CPU already. Sandy bridge is still pretty good. ;)

Yeh the 2600k is still going strong. Even when it does start to slow down, an overclock should fix that (though not on the stock cooler ofc)

Anyways, thanks for your help. I'll mark this as solved thanks to you

The adaptor will adapt from molex probably.

Don't worry case closed. Turns out the website i was getting my info from claimed that there was only one 6+2 pcie power cable. there are actually 4

thanks anyway
