I am getting a E3-1231 V3 and I have been told it's ~ the same performance as a i7.  Don't forget that Xeon DO NOT HAVE INTEGRATED GRAPHICS!

It's ~250$ USD

This, basically.

Personally I'd go for an 1155 Xeon, as they're generally much cheaper and offer the same or better performance for the money.

The only trick is finding an 1155 motherboard. V3 Xeon's are 1150, V2 Xeon's are 1155.

Not all Xeon's lack an iGPU. It's also not a huge deal.

Personally I would never waste my money on a Xeon again. They're locked down harder than a chastity belt and suffer because of it.

Save your money and do it right. Get a 4690k or better and then you can give it new life in a year from now.

The biggest mistake I ever made in computing was going with a Xeon for socket 1155. I 'upgraded' from an I7 950 and whilst the Xeon was cooler and used a lot less power it was right around the same as the I7. The issue began when I wanted to add another GPU and it just fell apart.

It was cheaper than the I5 2400 (non K of course) but I wish in hindsight I'd either gone for a 2500k or just hung onto my I7 because all I would have had to do was drop in a real Xeon (5650 Westmere that can be overclocked) and I would have saved three lots of upgrades.

These Xeons are enticing because they mimic the I5s and I7s, but Intel are wankers and you're better off bending over and going with the K model as it will save you lots of money and another possible upgrade in the future.
