best pentium CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

Whats the best pentuim?? is it the g3450 or the 23580 or what??

G3258 is the "unlocked" Pentium, that allows for heavy overclocking. I wouldn't get it anymore though. It used to be a great contender for gaming but now games are starting to move past the only-using-two-threads nonsense.

G3258 due to the unlocked multiplier.

I'm guessing you mean the G3258, and it'd be the best if you had a decent AIO and decided to OC.

Not sure if it were up against the G3450 non-OCed.

You don't need an AIO to overclock the G3258. A Hyper 212 EVO is more then enough overclock it, hitting silicon limits before thermal limits.

Well I'm not fully aware of the thermal range on the G3258 when overclocking, so if you were going with an aggressive OC to compete with the 4690K than I'd suggest an AIO or NH-D14 (or something alike).

Nope. You will need a lot less cooling on the G3258 to get it up to a certain frequency compared to a 4690K. To hit say 4.7 on a 4690K (assuming you got a decent chip) you'd want an AIO or D14, if you got just as good of a G3258, a Hyper 212 EVO would be just as sufficient cooling at 4.7.

I'm not looking at trying to hit 4.5 (or thereabouts) on both, but rather getting the G3258 to compete with the 4690K stock.

Still, I should probably know about the cooling requirements about CPUs before I try and educate people about them...

At 4.7 the G3258 trades spots with a stock 4790K according to the tests that Slick did

hahaha...in like what? 2 games? heres my test with it:

...and this is with the cpu operating at 4.5ghz and not all of them can even run at this speed...i highly suggest bumping it to a core i3 at least...

Please just stop it where it's at. I'm not trying to prove anything here and therefore don't need your video. I said Slick's tests.

yes thats what i said, he tested two games, two non cpu intensive test that are non conclusive...look at my video again...do you think my i7 stutter that bad and only fill the 780 to 60% on a daily basis?

@LinusTech this video of the pentium is VERY bad and should be removed from the internet.

it miss-represent the actual performance of this product and is miss-leading for the users.

Did you even see my insight to this thread? The OP asked what's the best Pentium, I told him, and I also suggested against it due to it only having two cores and with that no HT is starting to become lacking even in gaming. The point was already proven before you got here so what you just said made no sense. I'm tired of telling you to open your damn eyes and read.

Also, just because you're older doesn't make you better then anyone else younger, so stop using that as an excuse.

Not only is that rude, but it doesn't make any sense, because I already stated a while ago what you are trying to say, that something like an i3 would be better then a G3258.

Congrats, you get to be the first person on my ignore list.

But if someone is on a budget? Yes it will be losing its power in games over time, but if you don't have money to spend on a better cpu, its a good choice imo

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

Hmm.. I haven't had any issues with hitting 4.5ghz especially with proper cooling and I've gone through a handful of G3258's.

The G3258 plays the majority of games without issue and because of that, I don't think LTT's video of the G3258 is much of a misrepresentation. It does bomb and start stuttering when it comes to anything that's heavily threaded like streaming or recording but I think that's to be expected from a dual core.

well...as you can see in my video it struggle just to play to games on descent settings...probably it can play them on low settings with a low eng GPU's...but the reason i made this particular video is because many people think this cpu is a beast that can be paired with even high-end GPU's...everyday now on this forum someone is asking ''will this pentium G3258 bottleneck a GTX 970'' and you would be surprise at the answers that are given to those poor users...if you see anything like that happening around here please link my video, it will help having less people disappointed over time..

The G3258 is the best pentium provided you overclock it.

I prefer the i3 however, more consistent performance and no overclocking required.

H81 boards can have a bit of a hard time getting to 4.5GHz without bumping voltage past 1.3, but with Z97 you're right, I've gone through three G3258s on Z97 and they all hit 4.6-4.7 stable at 1.3.

It's common sense the G3258 will struggle at anything that uses more then two threads, and I hope you realize that guy is just self advertising for his video
