$650 USD build for a friend

Hey LTT,

So my friend would like a gaming PC for $650 USD. He already has a HDD and cooling. This is roughly based of Linus' recent video with the 3 builds. What do you guys think? Will the CPU bottleneck the GPU? Wasn't 100% sure about that. Also, the 6300 seems like a good choice too? The PSU may be a stretch as well.

 

Any help would be appreciated and this build must stay below $650 as that already is stretching his budget.

All looks good here. The G3258 is a very capable chip for gaming when overclocked. The CPU may bottleneck a tiny bit, but it's not a big deal.

 

I ran my GTX 770 with a G3258 for a month. The only reason I switched back is because I really needed the 4C/8T power of my i7.

Just make sure his cooling for the CPU is sufficient for overclocking; The G3258 can get performance similar to i7 4770k when overclocked.

I thought it was reasonably good for the price. I have the evo but it is a little out of budget for this build.

The Kingston Fury should be in the budget, with the A-Data SP600 and SP610 as well.

 

The V300 isn't bad, but they switched controllers to one that makes read speeds as slow as 160MB/s IIRC

Similar in non-multithreaded applications of course. He said his cooling is good so I'm not too worried.

It's 170MB read and 80MB write, it's not a good price. Those are the numbers others have tested and the numbers I have tested. I tested it on the three PCs in my signature.

DO NOT BUY IT!

Don't take the term "bottlenecking" too serious. You won't run into it that much, and if you do, the performance loss will be minimal.

 

As for every 'budget' build out there, I'd always suggest stretching the timeframe over which you get your components, to ensure that they will fit your needs in the future aswell. Back when I built my first computer, I put like an a6-3500 in it and I had regrets until the ends of time. You could always go for that dual-channel / better CPU. Also, I noticed there is no CPU cooler included. The system will function fine without a custom one, and you can surely have some overclocking space without it, but I'd recommend getting one just for the extra room.

The motherboard is also very expensive for what it is, seeing the Z97 G55 SLI isn't much more expensive and has SLI support and OC support out of the box.

Seems like a good idea. I went with it because of linus' video. I'll edit that in again.
