Hello guys, Im new to the forums so please excuse me..

I just wanted some input on thermal paste on the Intel 4790k processor.

Here's what I will be using:

Asus Sabertooth Mark 2

Intel 4790k

Corsair h100i

And yes, I plan on overclocking

If you guys have some picture references or tips for me, that would be great. Thanks!

The cooler should come with some. If you'd rather use something else other than what comes with it, try Noctua's NT-H1. It's what I use. :)

@ClassyEnd

Hello and welcome to the forum. Please remember to follow your topics and quote or "@" someone to let them know you have replied.

The H100i comes pre-applied with thermal paste, so you won't have to worry about doing it yourself. If you do want to buy some performance thermal paste, I highly recommend Gelid-GC Extreme, Prolimatech PK-1, Noctua NT-H1, Arctic MX-4, and IC Diamond 7. They will also work well on your GPU shaving off an additional 2-4C.

If you do want to buy and apply your own, you will first need to clean off the included thermal paste. To do so, use 90% or greater Isopropyl Alcohol along with microfiber cloth or coffee filters. I recommend having toothpicks nearby in case any accidentally gets in some hard to reach crevices.

To apply your own thermal paste you can use one of two methods. The pea method or the spread method. The pea method is placing a small pea sized drop on the center of the IHS and letting the mounting pressure of the cooler spread it out for you. The spread method is similar, except you spread the paste out yourself using a business card or some other spreading utensil. With high end thermal pastes, it is typically very viscous, so it is recommended to heat the syringe up by placing it in a plastic bag and boiling it for a few minutes. This makes the paste much more loose and easier to work with.

Lastly, the H100i is known to have mounting problems and is not guaranteed to work for everyone out of the box. Sometimes a washer mod is necessary in order for the cooler to make proper contact. Im on my phone otherwise I would link you the washer mod guide. It is easy to find though, just type in H100i Washer Mod into google and it will pop up.

@Faceman I'm planning on using the Asus Sabertooth Mark 2, so I've never heard of people having mounting issues with it, unless I haven't looked hard enough.

people seem to have mounting issues with a wide variety of motherboards. There doesn't seem to be a consensus of which mobo work and which don't.
