I am thinking of setting up a small server for Teamspeak and some games. However, I have no clue what hardware is and is not necessary for that kind of build. Any input would be much appreciated :)

Well TeamSpeak servers don't take up many resources, how many people do you plan on having on the TeamSpeak? Also, what games do you plan on hosting?

sorry for the late response. you didnt show up in my notifications :/

Like I said, plan on having 10-15 people in TS. Games I haven't decided yet. Probably CS:S, most likely GTA V if private servers are supported, not sure about future games.

This would probably be plenty for your needs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($289.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($67.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: A-Data XPG V1.0 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Corsair Force LS 60GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($42.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $605.91
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you need to save more money you can drop the processor down to an i5 or you can go with a Xeon E3-1230 V3 which is a bit cheaper but doesn't have integrated graphics so you would need to have a cheap GPU in the system. Also you can upgrade to 16GB of RAM if needed but on a lightweight Linux system you should be fine with 8GB.

PS: I've never put together a game server build so take this all with a grain of salt :P

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

-snip-

i7 seems a bit excessive. anyways, what parts are most important in a server build of these small dimensions?

Mainboard wise i can't do ASRock, but that shouldn't be a problem. SSD wise I have enough to spare one. I should be able to find some cheap ram from friends. So essentially I need a CPU, PSU, Case, Mainboard and a large HDD.. If I upgrade in to X99 in January, I would also have a CPU and PSU so that works out nicely.

For the motherboard you can really just go with whatever works for you since a server doesn't need very many special features. For game servers it is usually the RAM that is the most important so I suggest at least 8GB, if possible go with 16GB. For the case I would go with a Micro-ATX case just to save space but you can go with whatever you like :) For PSU any good-quality 400+ watt PSU would be fine for this build. As for the CPU personally I would go with at least an i5, preferably an i7 but you could probably use an i3 and that would be sufficient :)

alright. I just did a quick config which will run me about 400 Euro

Fractal Design Core 1300

EVGA 500B Bronze 500W ATX 2.3

ASUS H81M-D Plus

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB

Intel Core i5-4590

Crucial Ballistix Sport DIMM Kit 8GB

I'd liek to do 16GB and i7, but that would be well over 500 bucks. I'll see what prices are like on ebay.

That looks great to me :D In the future if needed you can always upgrade to an i7 or a Xeon and get another 8GB of RAM :)
