Best CPU to pair with my GTX 970

Go to solution Solved by ind3x,

For a red/black mobo the MSI z97 Gaming 5 is a nice board for the 4690k (i use this setup my self)

But the gaming 3 or maybe even the g45 are cheaper alternatives.

I can't remember if the g45 is red/black though

I am planning to buy a new GTX 970 as i believe it is the best choice for my price point at the moment and I have been wondering which CPU i should pair with this. Now, i have watched

Linus' 2014 buyers guide and he recommends the FX-6300 but I don't really want to go with AMD as i don't want the extra heat and power consumption. I have also considered the I5 4690k but i feel this is too pricey and not particularly worth it. If anybody could make a recommendation of a CPU which would go well with my build but which wont give off too much heat or be too pricey.

Thanks.

If you don't care for overclocking an i5 4590 is good.

Otherwise 4690K

Please don't overuse different fonts and sizes, it's not too pleasant to read :P

Hmm, it might be worth the extra money for the overclock-ability. It just still seems quite expensive for CPU and the AMD cpus have such tempting price points.

True, but middling single threaded performance will lead to bottlenecks. Better to just spend more than buy into a dead platform that won't be up to snuff :)

Also while i'm at it, what would be a nice red/black themed mobo to go with the 4690k which would blow my budget?

Check eBay/ craigslist/ whatever for a mobo/CPU combo second-hand in either Sandy or Ivy Bridge. Similar performance, (or better, as the case may be on Ivy Bridge in more than 50% of cases) low price, no wasted space for SATA express, have already undergone extra QA with another user.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Why? Nothing I've said is false. If a situation calls for FX I'll recommend FX. If an Intel CPU makes more sense I'll recommend that.

The only biased person would be is someone recommending something unsuitable.

And I've not gone "fx is crap only idiots buy lol get intel".

If you're just here to call someone biased/a fanboy and not back yourself up then you're not contributing any more than a fanboy comment.

What would be the downgrade going from the gaming 5 to gaming 3?

Definitely a 4670k at least, and a good solid Z97 board.

For the money i would take this...

Solid board which is feature rich for the asking price.

The number of PCI slots

For one card the gaming 3 is more than enough, and they are bot capable of SLI iirc

When in doubt: C4
