I know someone who wants to know if he can upgrade to something better than an i7-3770, frankly I don't know crap about intel. His pc was custom built so I don't really know any specs...

He can upgrade to a 3770k or a 4790k (with a new mobo), but theres no real point.

He could also upgrade to a 5820k/5930k +x99 board if hes doing heavy editing, but even then...still a stupid upgrade.

Not worth buying anything to beat that 3770. He is fine for now

Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Not really, the i7 3770 can be upgraded to a i7 3770K, which is the same CPU but with unlocked clocks and voltage (you can OC), but the motherboard needs to has the Z77 chipset too.

Changing the mobo for a Z97 chipset would allow him to get the i7 4790K, but the difference in performance with the 3770 isn't worth the difference ($400+).

Opting for the X99 platform can allow you to get a 5820K or better, but that's a lot more expensive, and the RAM would have to be replaced too.

Why does he want more power, specially on the CPU? If he is gaming or even rendering maybe he just needs a GPU upgrade.

He doesn't know much about pc components, but I explained a gpu upgrade is the way to go

I don't see why he'd need an upgrade. I personally think that knowing the rest of his specs would be a lot nicer..
