4k vs 1440p

Go to solution Solved by othertomperson,

From your viewpoint... Looking at my last post on prices.. What would you go for? The Samsung 4k, Acer 1440p, or the Asus 1440p?

It depends on your budget. Two 290s can handle 4K and without any AA (which you wouldn't miss) I think you could get a good experience out of them. But I personally would have reservations about buying a pre-owned monitor. New ones are still about $600, at least where I am they are. But that's also what 1440p IPS would cost to me, so for me the choice was easy.

Hey all.... Question here, I currently have two R9 290s(non-x) Crossfired atm..

I'm going to be buying a new monitor within the next week too two weeks, My question is can the two R9 290's(crossfired) supply decent frames in 4k? I understand 1440p is the sweet spot. But I found a Samsung 60hz 4k monitor the same price for some 1440p monitors. Should I just forget the 4k and go to the 1440p and not worry about it?

And in long term, would future games push more stress down on the r9 290's at 4k vs the 1440p?

Want all opinions!!! Thanks!

it will work on decent settings, but yeah, future games might force you to play at lower settings, but I'd go for the 4k one

4K will definately stress the GPUs more, as for the resolution choice, I'd go with the 1440p monitor, provided it has an IPS panel, as 4k monitors have a TN panel. However, if the panel is TN for the 1440p monitor, go with the 4K one

Specs: CPU: AMD FX 6300 Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A DS3P RAM: HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz GPU: MSI R9 270 OC edition Case: Sharkoon VS3-S SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB HDD: 1TB Caviar Blue PSU: Corsair CX500W

*If I say something that seems offensive, please don't take it seriously, it was most likely meant as a joke/sarcastically*

These cards got power, but for 4k.. nah not on highest, maybe on medium to high settings@40-60fps depends on game.

I wouldn´t buy 4k in the next 1-2years if its up to me...  stick with 1440p and save your money to buy in the future 4k monitors, they only can get cheaper.

Hope I did help you decide :D

Those really expensive 1440p monitors are for professionals that need 10 bit color which standard GPUs can't do, you only need this also two 290 won't be enough for 4K so save your money a go IPS 1440p monitor.

Turn AA off and you will be able to play them at ultra at 4k with two 290s at 40-60 fps. Generally speaking, obviously.

Amazing how people continue to put that extra 5% colour accuracy over as breathtaking a gaming experience as 4k...

Thanks all for the replies.

But coming from a 23in 1080p monitor... Would either choice be a somewhat big difference?

What i'm saying is, the 4k samsung is going for $410 with "Like New" status from amazon themselves... Here

Otherwise It would be that Acer monitor adam linked or this one from asus if i would go for 1440p: Here

Just torn down the middle, I'm thinking more on the 1440p side as it is BRAND NEW. But thinking of 4k just mind numbs me D:

Honestly go 1440p for now. We don't have the hardware yet to run 4K smoothly, and not many things are optimized for it, not even Windows itself

Wut. GTX 780/Ti 6GB SLI can, Titan/Black SLI can, 290 crossfire can, 290x crossfire can, (so 295x2 can), gtx 970 sli can, gtx 980 sli can... There is plenty of GPU hardware out now that is perfectly capable of running 4K, including the hardware mentioned in the OP. You need to read up on like the last 18 months of tech updates o.0 And the Windows argument is hilarious, when you stop and think about it. You are literally saying that the text being slightly fuzzy in the occasional 3rd party app (like nvidia inspector) is a dealbreaker when it comes to the ultimate in gaming and productivity experience right now.
