US Postal Service had Computers Compromised

More than 800,000 people, including employees, top directors and regulators, could be affected by a computer systems breach that may have compromised data including names, Social Security numbers and addresses, the U.S. Postal Service said Monday.
 
Employees, some retirees and staffers of the Postal Regulatory Commission, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Postal Service Office of Inspector General have been affected, the Postal Service said. An unknown number of customers also could have been affected, though not to the same degree, officials said.

But China has been tied to several recent intrusions, including one into the computer systems of the Office of Personnel Management and another into the systems of a government contractor, USIS, that conducts security-clearance checks.

Ouch. So basically, the FBI believes it was chinese hackers. The fact that an unknown amount of customers may be affected by the breach is scary to think of. (Next thing I know, I'll be getting spam in my mail, not just my email). Its unfortunate that the thought of this data is out there, waiting to be used. Given that Social Security Numbers may have been leaked, the probability of identity fraud is pretty high in my opinion.

 

Possible customer information that might have been collected includes names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

That's not good, but at least it's not as bad as it could have been.
