A Good book

pikkie-mahn-mastah

I really want to get into more reading. I do read articles and manuals so I do have a good working on the English language. I've just decided that I should read more thick books. So my question is, what are some good books for a computer geek who has a wild imagination and an old fashioned mind ie, chivalry, war stories, being a regular gentleman

  • A Song of Ice and Fire series
  • Atlas Shrugged (You said you wanted a big book)
  • Lord of the Rings trilogy
  • The Age of Intelligent Machines (Pretty much all of Ray Kurzweil's books)
  • Slaughterhouse Five

If you could mention some genres that would help a bit. The books I mentioned is kinda grasping at straws.

I started reading the "Dark Tower" series and for some reason I couldn't get into it. I tried so hard, but I just couldn't, maybe it's the poor translation, maybe I'm not fully understanding the 1st book, not sure what it is.

To OP:

LOTR series

GOT series (it differs from the tv show)

Harry Potter

If you like gangster stories and the US during the 1900. when NYC was ruled by gangsters please read "Gangster" by Lorenco Karkatera :)

The Hobbit + Lord of the Rings. If you don't read this in your lifetime, you haven't truly lived IMHO. (don't bother with any of the other Tolkien stuff, they were pretty bad)

Terry Pratchett books. Anything he makes is generally a good book, I recently read the long earth, and am going to read the long war soon.

Helmet for my Pillow -> war, excellent first hand story

With the old breed

If you "read" audio books, i recommend Hut 33 and Cabin Pressure, both very funny sitcoms

Philip Pullmans - His Dark Materials is superb. Terry Pratchett's discworld or Long Earth (cowritten with Stephen Baxter) series are brilliant. Also if you haven't already try - The Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy series. The movie really doesn't do it justice. Finally, The Time Machine and War of the Worlds are classics that are still excellent to read today.

You know that book was the inspiration for Bioshock?

Because he had a hard drive.

You know that book was the inspiration for Bioshock?

I don't think so much the book, as the philosophy it represents.

I makes sense since Andrew Ryan, is kinda of an anagra, of Ayn Rand. Andrew Ryan's life also mirror that of Ayn Rand

http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Andrew_Ryan

The same way that Bioshock was based around extreme capitalistic ideas, the second Bioshock was based around extreme marxist ideas.

Ken Levine really know how to make deep stories

Crime and punishment by Dostojevski, or The Idiot.

i would like to add The Brothers Karamazov to that.

Probably far-fetched but the Odyssey comes to mind. Lots of adventure in there, plus with the absurd amount of people.

Didn't see Brave New World suggested, so I'll suggest it. you may have read it. But in case you haven't, why not?

I really enjoyed reading it some years ago.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
