500w 80+ Vanilla + R9 290 - peak or continuous?

Built this for two cousins who are upgrading from a C2D, http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GnPQhM.

 

Is the  wattage good enough for continuous use for a good long time or do I need something a little beefier?

Also, clearance in the 200R is a bit of a problem when it comes to PCI-E connectors. Hope the 290 fits or I'll have to sell 'em the system with a 750 ti.

 

So LTT gurus, come on down!

I've built it already, with a 500w PSU. The 290 is in the retail box yet.

EDIT: I could either grab a 650w PSU or somehow fit the 280 in the 200R.

 

Picked up a 280 earlier (ASUS Direct CUII TOP 280), and the PCI-E connectors won't allow the side panel to slide over properly. This was the original card, but then the 290s went on sale and I picked one of those up too!

 

I know the 280 would be a perfect match, but that ASUS card is gigantic.

To be honest that is some really unbalanced build ... 500W is enough for it but you will be pushing it.

Why the hell would you mix a Core i3 with a Z97 board and an AMD R9 290?

 

They were on sale. Got the i3 for 122.00, the Z97 board also on sale, and the 290 dropped like a rock after Maxwell.

 

Upgradability in the future, mainly.

Yeah it's a little odd. I could use the 750 ti and swap in a G3258 instead to make use of the Z97 board.

I think to an entry level i3 as well, the 4360 is near the top-end i3 with a 3.7 GHz speed.

 

So:

-280

-i3 4360

-z97 board (for future i5 or i7)

-Should be just fine with a 500w PSU

The 4360 doesn't even use that much power. You could go with less if you really wanted to but the psu selection is smaller below 500w.

Yeah, the 4360 sips power, but that R9 280 could potentially use 300 or so watts at load, correct?

Hmm, alright. Lowest end PSU I have is a 430w is in a system I built for my mother, who uses it for work and whatnot.

 

The 500w one was only 30 bucks, so I snagged it up for my cousin's build.
