I was wondering if the Sennheiser HD 598's would be a good choice for playing games. I have heard allot of thing about them being  great for positional effects due to the open back nature. And If I were to get the HD598's would an Audioengine D1 be a nice combo. Thanks in advance  :)

P.s anyone saying to get "gaming headphones" with virtual surround :

Yes, 598s are fine, but the 518/558 are basically the same exact thing for less money.

So if you're looking to save some money, get the 518/558 instead.

It seems I'll probably end up getting the 598's (Money isn't that much of an issue). And I know people say these are headphones that don't need an amp/dac but also say that they will greatly benefit from one. I'm just wondering if a D1 for around $160 would be worth it.

I've never ran into a scenario where an amp made all the difference in the world, my Audeze LCD-2 headphones sounded nearly the same on my onboard/tablet/ipod touch compared to my Schiit Lyr and also my o2 odac.

People tend to over-exaggerate audio IMO.

IMO, if you want to spend that much extra on the amp, step up and get a pair of used HD650 instead of 598, and use a cheaper amp+dac like the "Syba dac": http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Stereo-Headphone-Amplifier-SD-DAC63057/dp/B009WN7QT4

(Not sure how much the dac+amp would be in AUS though)

I really wish that audio wasn't as complicated as it is. Maybe I should just get the 598/650 (More places seem to have the 598 in AUS) and use it with the on-board audio and get a dac/amp later if really needed. I seriously think though with 50 ohm and a sound pressure of 112db that seems really efficient like anything will drive it fine.

Oh yeah for sure, they would run fine off onboard.  You could get these: http://www.head-fi.org/t/738851/fs-sennheiser-hd650 as well.

you'd have to pay a slight import fee I think, and maybe shipping as well, but it's still a really good deal IMO.

Those would be Nice but due to the fact that I live in Australia (Definitely the best for PC hardware of any kind -_-) the 598's would be less of a pain to get. I'll most likely just go with the on-board + 598 but buy a dac/amp if really needed. Thanks though.

If you are going down that route (which I did the exact same thing), just skip a few steps and go get the HD650 to start with and pair it with a decent dac/amp, it will blow your expectations out of the water (at least it did for me). And I personally wasn't very happy with the sound of the HD5x8 series. I started with the 558 wasn't too impressed so tried the HD598. They sounded alright on first impressions, but then I kept getting buzzing in bass frequencies around 60-100hz or so, and the bass was lacking to say the least. I eventually ended up going through a couple 598s before finally just upgrading to the HD650; and I have been in love with these headphones ever since. For the price of the HD518 though, it is an amazing value pair of open headphones.

Well that sounds good. I can get a pair of 650's for $380 AUD. But what would be a good dac/amp to go with that? (under $200 preferable). And as I said money is not an issue even with getting into the $500 + range. However If I start to get scared because I feel the bullets are actually flying around me I don't mind B)

If you like the 650, try HD700 if you got the chance (maybe in a store, or expo), big chance you'll love it even more.

There has been split opinions on the HD700. Some people think it's crap, others, including me, love every bits of it. I don't quite understand why the contrast in opinions though.
