Snow screen on both VUDU playback and LG Blu-Ray playback

I get the snow screen when trying to play both VUDU and Blu-Rays on my LG Blu-Ray player on my Windows 8 PC.  I don't have this issue on my Windows 8 laptop so I'm sure it has to do with the video card and/or the monitor.
 
The video card is an MSI Radeon 7970 and the monitor is an ASUS VG248 and they are both connected via DVI-D.  I was thinking maybe I need a Display Port cable to make it all work right?  Wanted some suggestions before running out and throwing away money on a Display Port cable.

Connected via HDMI and that solved the playback problem but created another problem with setting the right resolution on the monitor LOL.  I think Display Port cable would solve both issues.  Need to get my hands on a mini dp to large dp cable.
