290=780

760<770<780<970<780TI<980

see the chart?

The 290 is more powerful than the 760 so go for the 290. Plus you get 3 games when you buy the 290(depending where you buy it).

Don't think there is a point in getting the 4GB variant of the 760. The 290 is a clear winner in the price range.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

R9 290. No brainer. The 290 is MUCH more powerful and competes more directly with the GTX 780/970, just to put it in perspective. The GTX 760 competes more with the R9 270X and R9 280.

Plus with the 290, you'll get 3 free games with their never settle bundle. :D

If you want the power of the GTX780/970 but can't afford it....... instead of the 760, get the 290, as it equals the 780 in performance.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

r9 290 its a no brainer for performance. i assume your res is higher than 1080 since youre looking at a 4GB 760 and the 290 has been proven to out perform when you throw textures, eye candy and resolution at it. although it still runs hot.

Open box deal. Pick it up fast there's most likely nothing wrong with it and it was most likely never used before. $250 for a 290 is an excellent value for money.

Not sure if you get the games though.........

The GPU was never used it's just in a pre Opened Box. The box could have been accidentally sliced or opend and then they have to discount it and sell it as an ... "Open Box" under their company policy. It could have been an old review sample for all we know. You will still get the games don't worry.

R9 290 definitely is the better card but if you want PhysX for Witcher 3 and other titles then you have to consider getting an Nvidia card.

760 will not have the ballz to run hardware accelerated Physx and decent GFX settings in TW3.

I never told him to get the GTX 760 specifically.  I told him to look at getting an Nvidia card if he wanted PhysX in The Witcher 3.  Also the price of the GTX 970 is so low that it would be worth waiting for and saving up some more money for the OP to get it.

Not really as the R9 290 @ $250 is a far better value for money and fps per dollar than the 970 is @ $330.

Well for some $80 more to get a great card and get PhysX may mean something to them.  Seriously with that little difference I'd save up and get the GTX 970.  I totally understand the fps / dollar but one thing you are not factoring in here either is the heat that R9 290 will create.  Does he want to deal with that?

Agreed, everyone has their own preference,.. some don't care about the AMD heat so much, Some people would also prefer to stick with Nvidia 'no matter what' because of the ecosystem/software in place and would prefer to wait/save the extra $80 to stick with Nvidia if the 760 is too slow.

Well I did not know that you have to hold the GPU in your lap while you play games. I think the case and cooling unit will do just fine at dealing with the heat LOL. I mean we have had toasty GPU parts for many many years now and it's never been an issue rather than the few time when the GTX 590 caught on fire.

Many nvidia fans would buy a 770 for $310 over a 290 for less money and be more than happy with less performance and similar heat output. Sometimes ego overtakes the logic center in the brain.

these days, since the launch of GTX 970, I don't understand why anyone even considers AMD at the moment. 970 trumps pretty much all top tier cards in the red camp, other than maybe the 295x2 which isn't a fair comparison at all since that is a dual GPU solution.

i5 2500k+Noctua NH-D14 - 8GB HyperX Blu - 240GB PNY XLR8 - Sapphire Reference 7970 - P8Z68-V Pro/Gen 3 - OCZ ZX 850W

Unlike *some* people, I do not claim to be an expert computer guru.  When I make mistakes, I apologise and I own up to them.  Then, I continue to learn so that I may provide those in need with educated answers to the best of my ability.

Because some people are FIXED with staying on the intended ecosystem.

Be it Nvidia or AMD, some people prefer to stick with what they know and use already.

Even really superfantastic deals on opposing companies cards, they would not budge.
