Today I lost my second virginity, with an R9 280.

There comes a time in a man's life when he must face his fears and do some pretty testicle shrinking things. After weeks of unhappy temperatures, I decided to removed the heatsink from my Sapphire R9 280 and replaced the thermal compound.

 

Removing the heatsink from the PCB was a lot harder than I anticipated and cleaning the old TIM did not go smoothly (it went all over the transistors). But after 30 minutes of carefully cleaning while holding my breath and thinking "OH MY GOD! I'M KILLING MY VIDEO CARD!", I applied some Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 (that's all I had at hand), re-assembled the card and plugged it back in it's slot.

 

I turned on the PC and was greeted with a cheery black screen. Then fans were not spinning. THE CARD WAS DEAD. Not surprising since I forgot to plug in the power cables.

After plugging it correctly this time, it booted up correctly and began to test.

 

I use Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition with AA turned to extreme as a heat test (I swear, it absolutely thrashes your GPU). With the PC room at an air conditioned 23C, running the GPU core at 1140Mhz with the original TIM,  it would peak at 82C with 85% fan speed. Since applying the new TIM, temps have dropped to 75C with 74% fan speed. The noise level has dropped significantly too!

 

Man, I'm still shaking but I think it was worth it.

I believe he meant he ran the GPU without the PCI-E power connected.

yeah wouldnt it start drawing the power from the PCIE slot instead?

Also based on the title I thought you got your dick stuck in one of the fans.

STOP using prime95 with Haswell CPUs!

It would just draw the same amount of power as it would if it had been plugged in, it just wouldn't have enough to power on.

Tell me about it! When I managed to remove the heatsink, I half expected part of the GPU to be still stuck to it.

But i did that once to my 8600gts and was like "if i have deaded it, i would have been deathed it"

LOL. I noticed That Sapphire doesn't make it easy to unplug that fans, perhaps to make sure you don't forget to plug them back in.

I think the airflow in your case needs some improvement. You should also use better paste like the NHT1 or be ballsy like me and use CLU. At 1120 core @ 1.181V I peak at 70C with 35% fan speed. The funny thing is the ambient temperature seems to have NO effect on any thermals of my rig O.o

Lucky you, where I live it gets hot in summer so that means PC is running hotter unless air conditioning is on. And it's supposed to be cooling off now but still like 90
