Hello,

As this is my first topic on ANY forum, please be nice :)

I am thinking about upgrading my CPU, I currently have a AMD FX-4100 3.60 GHz

Is it going to make any difference if I upgrade to a eight-core (AMD FX-8350)? and does it effect the performance in games like Bf4, Crysis 3, Cod AW?

I just played bf4 with everything on Ultra, I got around 35fps with my:

- AMD FX-4100

- GTX 660

- 8GB ram

Can i push it alot higher with a better CPU or do I get a very small difference then?

If you are only gaming then you are fine for a few more years.

Yes it would perform better, but not much better because your 660 is the biggest bottleneck you have at ultra settings.

Also not many AM3+ motherboard that are not 990FX chipset are up to the task of supporting an 8 core AMD FX chip and all it's power requirement...so you are probably doomed right of the bat unless you went with an high-end board...Also as it's been stated already your GPU is olding you back so going with a new CPU will most likely not improve performance in most games.

...and you are in a spot where if you go with a better GPU you'd need more CPU power...so your parts are balanced which is good but that means you'd have to upgrade both to get noticeably better performance unfortunately.

So if i ever want to upgrade my pc, is the best choice to upgrade it all?

well you can re-use your RAM, PSU, case, harddrives etc so maybe just sell CPU and motherboard as a combo along with GPU and get new stuff?

So what about AMD 970 and AMD 760G motherboards? They've had a chance to exist, haven't they? And since most of the FX line is Vishera, which is not optimized to run on anything lower than 990FX, which is weird to me.

Also, the only non-Vishera CPUs I know are the FX-4130 and the FX-6200...

kompooterz.

bulldozer have seen 4, 6 and 8 ''core'' chips (should be called 2, 3 and 4 modules chips respectively) the 8 ''core'' ones are the FX-8120 and FX-8150 and btw those should also only be paired with 990 boards.

the reason behind this is that most 970 and 760 chipset boards are only 3+1 and 4+1 power phase and non heatsinked vrm's and cheap mosfet...they are not up to the task of running FX 6 and 8 core cpus...except three boards: gigabyte 970A-ud3p, asus m5a97 evo and msi 970 gaming (those have heatsinked vrms and more power phases.

Definitely , you will get alot more performance , i used to have a 660 and 8350 in my PC , i used to get 40-50 Fps , so i would say go for it :)

If you're getting that much gain, I'd say (if your board can support it) go for a 6300. If I'm not wrong, 4150 is a bulldozer chip, and BF4 (again, if I'm not wrong) supports 6 threads. 6300 has 6 threads, (albeit 3 'modules'), and is piledriver, meaning more IPC.

I borrow this topic, because mine question is gonna also is. That what is the next best upgrade to CPU? Because i have same as the starter. But mine GPU is R9 270 and i'm using only AMD's stuff.. Also have 12gb ram and 650w supply. And i don't want to buy new supply.

Failure is not an option!

AMD CPU's are way worse at gaming and even the FX-8350 is hardly an upgrade to the FX-4100 in regards to gaming...you'd be better selling motherboard and CPU to the most offering and grab something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.98 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($48.99 @ Mwave)

Total: $228.97

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Again, your parts are balanced wich is good but if you wan't noticeably better performance in games you'd need a better CPU and an high-end GPU (R9 290 or better...GTX 970 is what i would suggest of course)
