So yesterday I finally upgraded my desktop from 32bit to 64bit, partly in hopes that i would be able to use all my 4 GB RAM and upgrade to the allowed 8, limited by the Motherboard.

So i backed up my old system and created a virtual machine from it, and did a clean install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. A little time later the machine is up and running, but still limited to 3.62GB RAM, which I had moved the limit to on the 32bit install... So basically I have gained nothing from this, apart from a couple of programs. Windows Resource Manager tells me its "Hardware Reserved".

Can anyone help me to remove this damn limit? Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit has supprt for 192GB RAM and all me components should be 64bit capable.

Thanks in advance.

Check in the BIOS how much RAM is given to the graphics adapter. Since it's marked as hardware reserved it's likely that the 380mb out of the 4GB you have is just reserved for that.

You still only have 4gb's of ram. You need to put more ram into your motherboard in order to get 8gbs

Are you using integrated graphics?

How are you checking it?

I have 16GB but only 13.8 Avalible.

It's a mix of the system using it, page files, etc...

I have 12GB of RAM(don't ask for the bizarre config), and it says I have all of it available in Control Panel(even with paging enabled).

Interesting, I do have a few things running.

It's normal for mine to be below 15gbs.

As for 12GBs of ram, be careful mixing speeds if you don't already know; they all run at the same speed.

I'm not mixing speeds. All the same. I just had some issues way back where I ended up with three modules.

Nope

I know... But I want to be able to use 4 out of 4 GB before I go out and buy more.

I'm just trying to keep this system alive for as long as possible, while I safe up some money to build a new one.

Just buy an extra DIMM or a new set if you want more RAM...

It's mainly different hardware devices reserving memory for themselves. Page files are part of the OS so windows can tell that the memory is there.

If you did it right, the 4/4 will be available. Adding another 4 will either make it read as 8.0GB or 7.62GB. Check System Configuration - Boot - Advanced options and make sure that all of the boxes are unchecked.

I guess the question above should be does your pc HAVE integrated graphics? Even if you aren't using it and have a dedicated card, the system still provisions memory for it unless you turn the integrated graphics off in the bios.

You'll never get it to say 4.0GB available, there is always some RAM reserved for hardware, the computer uses this to operate.  I have 16GB installed but only 15.2GB available for example.  794MB are system reserved.

Interesting, are they still dual channel in bios?

Yup.

The system doesn't reserve memory, in fact no modern operating system reserves memory. He has either integrated graphics or an APU that's eating up his memory. You can reclaim every megabyte of your system memory if you know what you're doing in your UEFI.

The RAM is reserved by the system.

You can change how much is reserved in the BIOS but it's not going to be much of a change when you've only got 4GB of RAM in your PC.

So I updated the BIOS, turned off integrated graphics and turned its allocated memory size down to the minimal allowed. Guess what?? Nothing happened...

So I ordered 2x2GB Mushkin RAM with specs that I know the computer is somewhat capable of using and now i have 8 GB RAM in the computer, where approx 7.8 GB is usable :D

I don't think the BIOS had any influence on the amount of "system reserved" memory, but updating it allowed me to use RAM, that was not from Lenovo :)
