Quick minecraftserver.jar app question.

1. I believe they are multi-threaded, when I was running my private server earlier I noticed all four core usages spiking every now and then, and the higher clock speeds do help.

2. The clock speed of the ram does help, though so does the speed of the drive the actual server is being stored on. (SSDs are a great option for storing servers on as they are very fast)

They both use 4 cores max and benefit from higher clock speeds.

I use a SSD for that reason. Chunks load really smoothly.

Are the minecraftserver.jar and minecraftserver.exe multithreaded applications?

And do they benefit from cores or clock speed on the CPU side?

And amount or clock speed on the RAM side?

For the most part, they are single threaded applications(unless if things have changed). They benefit from clock speed, but more importantly individual core IPC. They amount of ram needed is entirely dependent on how many people you are hosting. The minecraft server gets really memory hungry with lots of people and only gets worse if you decide to add mods.

Also, if the server uses all the allocated ram it will start to badly lag and increase cpu usage, so be sure to give it a little extra ram.

RAM is not an issue. I badly lag at around 10 people. It's not the internet.

I have given it 8GB. And I only use around 70% with those people.

So is it the RAM clock speed (I am at 1333MHz because of a extra 4GB stick)

Or the CPU clock speed (I am at 4.2GHz on all 4 cores)

I doubt it would be the cpu speed.

If you are doing too many things while the server is running it could cause it to lag.

Well. I was not doing anything. But I usually have many background items.

Are you running the server on your desktop or on a separate computer? if it is on your computer you will have a bit of lag as I am also guessing you have minecraft running too, this setup just has two rather greedy applications pulling at the same resources also as minecraft is also a java app it will pull from your memory allocated to java and can help to choke the server. Your other programs probably running in the background wont help, its fine for a small server but if you want to do this properly look at renting a cheap vps or using a spare pc if you have one for the server.
