Yep it is still perfectly fine for 1080p gaming, but for the price you could get an R9 290

depends on the game i was able to run skyrim on ultra at 1080 with no issues at all and COD maxed out all the time

Those two aren't demanding at all.. I could run Skyrim at ultra on a 7770..

Well, yes. But I would save for a 970 it's guaranteed (or how you spell it) for ultra on 1080p for 2 years. BTW as @EcoBoost said you could get a R9 290 it's not bad for 1080p
