Hi guys,

I'm currently using an iPhone 4 and even though I can't purchase an android phone at the moment I've just been wondering and wanting to ask the question.

How difficult is it going from iOS to Android? And also I've heard that android phones are prone to getting malware and are less secure than iOS or Windows Phone 8 and obviously I wouldn't want to use a less secure platform. So, are android phones really less secure and prone to getting malware like I've heard? Or is it pretty good as far as security goes. If anyone can answer any of these questions I'd be quite gratefull.

If a hacker wants your information, he'll get it regardless of platform. Both operating systems have publicly known loop holes, how else would they me jail broken or rooted?

It's quite easy to go from iOS to Android. Some things take a bit of learning but you will find the basics are well basic. It is the customization that can be a bit more confusing. Rooting a phone and using a custom rom is amazing. You can get the phone exactly how you want. Changing the kernel for overclocking/underclocking, better battery life, better looking picture on the phone, and much more.

As for malware yea you can get it on the phone (any phone can) but that's because you can actually download files from the internet. That's the mind set people have in thinking macs can't get virus's. Get your self avast antivirus (free) and it scans files that you download. Just watch what you download and what sites you go to.

The freedom you experience going from iOS to android is amazing. Being able to have icons in the corner of the screen instead of having to be lines up starting from the top left. A much more efficient notification bar.

I'm glad I switched to my Note 2 from when I use to have a iPhone.

I've never had a problem with malware and so forth with android. I think the main issue from converting is getting used to the new platform and the various operating systems. Android is much more customizable and generally speaking less straight forward as iOS is. Considering you're on a tech forum you're probably going to get the hang of the OS pretty quick :P

Thanks for all your feedback so far. It's quite helpful. When I was buying my iPhone I almost was going to buy a HTC One but didn't because I didn't want to regret it since I'm used to iOS. I already had an iPad 4 before my iPhone and I'm just really used to iOS, it's like a safety zone you don't want to leave because it's so easy to learn.

I had an iPhone 4 in 2011 and made the switch to an HTC Desire HD and since then I've never turned back. From there I got a Galaxy Nexus, and now now I have a Galaxy S3. Do it. Strictly speaking they are not really insecure. Do you use Windows? That's insecure, but if you're not an idiot, you won't come across any malware. You will love the customisation, screen size, and overall freedom when it comes to using the OS. It's wonderful.

If you're on this very forum, I can guarantee you two things:

  1. you'll like android better than iOS (inherently all of us do)
  2. you're tech savvy enough to learn the ins and outs of an Android phone within a few hours

Hmm....the more and more I read all of your experiences with Android the more it makes me want to switch. I think I'll dobsome thorough research first and eventually (possibly) make the switch.

Is there anything about Android that any of you found iOS did better?

I don't know why but when I think Android I think Star Trek, particularly Star Trek - The Next Generation.

I currently use a Galaxy Nexus. Having a Google phone (even though last gen.) is awesome! Any support the Nexus 4 gets, whether from Google or from 3rd party ROM devs travels down to the Galaxy Nexus, so really it doesn't feel like I have an old phone at all!

I assume you're talking about the Nexus 4, yes? I'm just interested to know, have you had an iPhone4/4S before, if so does the Nexus 4 feel like an iPhone 4 with the back as well as the front being covered in glass?

I cant think of any and even if you find something that you dont like there is a high probability that you can find an alternative for it in the play store. i dont use stock video player, keyboard not that there are not good but there are way better options available in the play store.

I have actually been thinking in the passed couple of days if Apple makes iOS 7 pretty different I might just stay with the platform for quite a while yet. So I might be looking at getting an iPhone 6 or 7 when they come out in the future.

I realise this makes this topic pretty pointless but it seems, form things I've read and heard, that Apple are trying to really revamp iOS. But I'll have to see tomorrow with the Apple Keynote to see if I will indeed stay with iOS.
