I feel like it's time to upgrade but I dont know what to do...

NeedSomePractice
Go to solution Solved by typographie,

Not from what I have experience with, but who I am to judge real world performance.

I'd have to ask exactly what your experience is, then.

The GTX 970 averages out to around 9-10% faster than the R9 290 in most of the benchmarks/reviews I've seen with widespread agreement that its on par with the R9 290X.

But like I said, I agree: 90% of the performance for 70% of the price is a pretty good deal.

Hi! I think I need to upgrade my GPU

Spec: i5-3570k

          MSI z77 GD-65

          GTX 660 ti

          8gb 1600 ddr3

Should I buy another GTX 660ti or Sell it and get GTX 970?

Sell and get a r9 290 for 100$ less than the 970 and the same performance.

and the same performance.

Approximately 10% slower performance, but still a good value if you can find one for that much cheaper.

I am basing my system off of my friends computer who has the exact same computer as me, but 970's. My computer performs the exact same, if not better in some games without mantle of course

Now don't get me wrong, it could be that what we based it on could be more generous for crossfire, than sli. But I did edge out over the 970's.

What resolution?

What kind of socks do you prefer?

Most of the time I play DOTA and NBA 2k but sometimes I play Battlefield and other AAA titles to have fun.

1920x1080

what do you mean by what kind of socks? (sorry Im a noob)

@typographie & @Tagiau thanks for the feedback...

Just messing with you about the socks,

If you play at 1080p and you play games like that (I'm going to assume you're not a 144hz monitor guy), get a 970.

I have a 650w power supply. I look at newegg for the spec of r9 290 sapphire vapor x and it says that 750w power supply is required.

@Santa_Dwarf thanks!

The 290 is a power eater, but 750w is an overstatement.

650 Watts is fine, as long as its a reasonably good quality unit. Your actual system power draw probably wouldn't be much higher than ~400 Watts or so under load.

Scrap the SLi, re-sell the 660Ti and get a GTX 970. Better performance, runs cooler, consumes less power and OC's like a dream. I have 2 of it from Gigabyte. And your 650W will do the job for it at the same time.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K @4.5Ghz | Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme 4 | Cooler : Cryorig R1 Ultimate | Ram: 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws | GPU : Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 2-Way SLi | Storage: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo / 4x2TB Caviar Black | PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000W G2 | Windows 7 64-bit  | Case: Enthoo Pro | オール・イズ・バニッティー (all is vanity)

If you work hard, you can make your own Luck.

upgrade time is something you decide for your self brother.

but still I don't really suggest on selling your 660 ti. but hey your item your choice.

you can buy a 970 or like the above post said if you can grab a 290 for 100 bucks less then go for it.

I say keep the 660 ti just in case something happened and you need to rma your card or just use it to build a cheaper htpc rig or an extra gaming pc your friend can use.

Live your life like a dream.

Im just going to sell my 660ti to my sister for $100 cause she's going to build a PC on black friday or cyber monday. and I think that the 660ti is faster than the 750ti...

then that's a great idea then :) whether it's better or not probably won't matter since you're still getting 100 bucks :)

lol! I saw a MSI r9 290x with a price of $359. I thought it was a good deal but after looking at r9 290x vs GTX 970.... the GTX 970 wins.

If prices are nearly equal, go with the 970. The 290X can get a bit hot, even with aftermarket coolers, whereas you can generally bet on the 970 having plenty of headroom for overclocking.
