Power supply failure?

Go to solution Solved by E-Ro,

Update-

Got my new PSU installed, everything is working perfectly. And theres no drivers or anything to install which is nice.

Ok, so a few minutes ago I tried to turn on my pc, but nothing happened. No lights, no fans, it wont turn on at all. the pc is relatively new, I built it a year ago and have had ZERO issues until now. I checked the socket with a lamp, and the lamp turns on so I know its not that. Also the blue light on my monitor turns on just fine, so the wall power is working.

I think it is my power supply, but my power supply is a seasonic platinum, so its pretty high end and its only a year old(well, less then a year, I built it December 2013.

I am trying not to panic here, but as each minute passes I get more frustrated, and nervous. any help is appreciated.

Another thing, for the past few months, in the middle of the night the pc would turn itself on, like randomly, it would be in sleep and it would turn on before eventually going back to sleep. Could that be part of the problem? Maybe it just needs a cleaning?

Email the nice people over at seasonic, if they're anything like Corsair they'll pay for the shipping there, replace it and give you 101 free goodies too.

doesn't really sound like a power supply failure, the pc turning itself on sounds more like a short-out and check your connections.

Is the power switch on the power supply in the 'on' position?

I will try that, it will have to wait until tomorrow though. I am not going through all that so late at night.

Lol, yeah, the power supply is set to on. It worked fine yesterday, and no one has opened it, so the power supply would not be changed. I took a look and its all normal in there, just no lights on at all and obviously, as I said, it wont turn on.

Yup, No one opens up the case ever. Only me, so it couldn't have been changed. But I checked anyway and it is set to on as it should be.

Any more hands on troubleshooting is going to have to wait for the morning, but keep the answers coming you guys, I really really appreciate it. Nothing like coming home to a pc that wont turn on. Ugh.

wtf?

The power switch is on the OUTside of the power supply...

why would you need to open up the case?

Sorry I worded that awkwardly, I am flustered and using a phone to post this.

The power supply button is facing the wall, it has no space for anyone to flip it without moving the case. I looked back there and it is on as it should be.

I switched to my laptop, so my posts should be more coherent now.

Anyway, could my motherboard have a problem? I cant imagine why any of my parts would randomly fail now. Nothing has been touched at all, and the only time I opened up the case was to clean it a few months ago. It worked fine after that.

Try taking your motherboard out and boot it on a clean, non-conductive surface. If nothing happens, try taking out all the hardware you don't need to boot (Dedicated GPU, network card, sound card, all but 1 stick of Ram, etc) and try again. If it boots, keep adding hardware back to the board 1 at a time until it stops booting, at that point you likely have your issue.

My first guess was a PSU/Motherboard issue, so this probably won't do a lot of good if they're broken.

Also assuming it's not a CPU issue, in which case your system won't POST at all.

I bought a new power supply, same exact model and make as the one that failed. I am still under warranty, but I refuse to wait long for this, so the new one will be here on Thursday. In the meantime I emailed Seasonic with all the necessary information. Once they send another I will have 2, so should this happen again I wont be without a pc.

Before you ship it though, I would suggest testing the PSU using the paper clip test or with a safer 24 pin jumper if Seasonic provided one with your PSU.

Most of the time it can be a PSU but there are also times that the PC won't start if the Mobo, GPU, RAM, or CPU got KIA.

Other test is to pull out both of the ram and turn on the PC again. If it doesn't turn on,

connect back the Ram, remove the GPU and turn it on again.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K @4.5Ghz | Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme 4 | Cooler : Cryorig R1 Ultimate | Ram: 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws | GPU : Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 2-Way SLi | Storage: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo / 4x2TB Caviar Black | PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000W G2 | Windows 7 64-bit  | Case: Enthoo Pro | オール・イズ・バニッティー (all is vanity)

If you work hard, you can make your own Luck.

Thank you for the advice, but I did indeed test the psu, and it is definitely not working.
