Reusing power supplies

My dad built a computer around 2008 with a Corsair TX650 power supply and used it for about 3 years until the computer gave him problems - unrelated to the power supply. We still have it sitting in a closet and I wondered that if I built a computer, would it be worth reusing it if I got the dust out or should I buy a newer one and start fresh?

Would the newer ones not be more efficient?

If you are on a tight budget, then you could use it (its most probably fine) but if I were buying a new computer I would just get a new PSU because they arn't that expensive anyway when compared to a whole new system.

You should reuse it, reuse reduce recycle. Corsair is pretty reliable and has a 5 year warrenty on the tx series, which if it was only running for 3 years corsair trusts it to run good for more than 5.

If it works you can use it.  Unless you want a newer psu with features the old one doesn't have then upgrade.  If the features of the old one work for you then use it.

I am still using my TX750 V2 after around 3+ years, not a single hiccup.

Is this TX650 (CWT) or TX650v2 (Seasonic) we're talking about?

TX is a good line-up. If it hasn't been used 24/7 for 3 years, then I would reuse it.

Also note that as the unit gets older, it does not deliver its rated output.
