Backlight bleed....this bad?.....*update*

Hi Guys

Just looking for your opinions as to whether this is a bad instance of backlight bleed?  I've always had TN gaming panels but wanted to get a decent IPS to go with my gaming monitor. I've just got this LG 3440 x 1440 today and I'm debating on sending it back because of this. At £800/$1200 I expected it to be perfect.

The camera seems to have made the 2nd picture look worse than it is to my eyes but the first is what I see looking at it.

Would you send it back?

@Jumbosausage, that is quite bad. Even just the first pic. I would take it back if I were you. Not good enough for that amount of cash. It is unfortunate, though, that because the screen is wider it's going to be more prone to backlight bleed cause there's a bigger display to illuminate. But still, that is quite bad IMO.

You could just mask off 1 inch around the screen to cover the bleed areas and change your resolution.

But yea you should RMA it.

Maybe he should just masks off the 16:9 portion of the screen and have a 27" 2560x1440 display. :P JK

depends if it truly looks like the first pic, I wouldn't worry too much unless you work in low light conditions and or have black backgrounds a lot of the time. If it really looks like the second pic thats terrible, and I would send it back.

are you still on factory default 100 brightness?

if so, lower and then re-evaluate. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people are calling "aaahhh backlight bleed is horrible" when their displays are way too bright

120cd/ms is about ~58 brightness, and the highest most people should use

It came out the factory at default 70 brightness and to be honest changing it up or down doesn't seem to make a difference. The thing is for 95-98% of the time it isn't going to bother me but knowing it's there and having paid so much it kind of bugs me. I've read else where on the net that people are having problems with these and some even got a worse case of bleed in the replacement. If I did watch a movie at full resolution then I'm sure I'd notice it more. I just wasn't sure how lucky you have to be to get an IPS display with no bleed at all.

Is this the 34um95? I have been hearing about a lot of backlight bleed issues on all the 34" 21:9 monitors. I'm surprised that in Linus' review he didn't mention the backlight bleed in his 34um95 (or his 29um65), but did notice backlight bleed on the 34uc97 review.

Yeah it's the 34um95-p...Not sure what the "p" is for? I suspected it was just a slightly different model number here in the UK.

It really is a great screen though (backlight bleed aside) for the last 3 years I've used dual 27" displays for my work and this just feels better. I didn't think it would but not having the bezels is awesome. I'm going to give the guys at overclockers UK a ring tomorrow and see what they can do for me. I've read somewhere that one guy had to have his sent back to Germany for repair and then when he received it back it was worse. Eventually he got a good one but this was 3 months down the line. I don't want to be messing about like that.

what's the difference between the first and second picture?

as we know, camera's are bad at over/underblooming light, but if it's closer to the 1st, I'd say that's not that bad.

I checked mine just now and it's similar to the 1st - so not perfect, and honestly I don't notice. backlight bleed is so overblown on this monitor imo

It looks more like the first picture to my eye's. £800 is a lot of money to have to put up with a not perfect display. If I'd have paid £200 for one I might have let it slide but...I dunnu It's just bugging me.

Normally, the decent range IPS panels which most people here buy, have minor case of back light bleeding. You are paying much less for the monitor. It is a compromise. Back light bleeding is also common an IPS driven phones and tablets, but that has to due to with the increase cost due to the manufacturing process or making it thinner, and also, well it's thinner so the panel isn't as good.

However, in your case, this is abysmal. I know the camera exaggerate things, but still. That is a direct return. If your next one still has this problem, pick a different monitor. You are being ripped-off with this one.

honestly, if it's like pic #1 it doesn't look that bad. I would call that just IPS glow (because IPS are just naturally more vibrant than TN), but I just don't have the patience for that debate with forum nerds.

Yup return. It's miles better than before.

By the way, I assume your camera is not set to automatic and that the picture you took, looks like it does in real life.

Yup that's exactly what i see when I look at it. It's better than before I agree but still not good enough for the money. I'm not taking another gamble with this model.

  • 1 year later...

What do you guys think about this one?

I just got it.(34um95). In real life it is a lot less intense tho. Picture makes it look really bad. Only left side is bugging me, Right looks ok.

Other than that monitor looks perfect.
