FX 6300 ocing

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

How did you go about overclocking? You cannot just jump to any old frequency you wish and any old voltage. You have to take it slow stressing every time.

Chicken,

So built my rig a month backish and finally replaced the stock cooler with hyper t4 (slightly more compact thinner version of the evo) and was extremely disappointed when I found out that you could only mount the hsf blocking at least one memory slot facing upwards.  It basically mounted almost exactly as a stock cooler except bigger and bulkier.  Anyway you pretty much shouldn't get this cooler if you're running an AMD platform but it performs exceptionally well.  So I tinkered around with my multiplier to try and hit 4.5 stable and I just raised the voltage to 1.4125 for my Asrock 990fx extreme 4 and my 6300 and got it stable maxing out around 53C with ambient temps of around 74F, I'm running the T4 in push-pull with another 120mm fan and it stays relatively quiet.  BUT I have hit a barrier everytime I run prime 95 (small ffts) at anything above 4.5 my system will freeze and I kept trying different voltages and such but I had no luck.  If anyone has a successful oc to around 4.7-4.8 and knows how to get there, as I am new to overclocking, then I'd like to hear suggestions because I'm not really temperature limited as the 6300's tj max (thermal throttle point I believe) is 70C and I'm willing to be around 65C under full load.  Here are some screenshots:post-27039-0-52293300-1370467435_thumb.j

I know that I started at 3.6 and slowly every time bumped the multiplier by .5 (100mHz) and raised the voltage accordingly then ran prime for only bout 20 minutes each time. 4.5 was the highest stable clock I was able to get. On 4.5 I ran prime for 2 hours everything was fine at 1.4125v but I couldn't hit 4.6 and it was not the temperatures.

looking at that pic your voltages are at 1.304v which could be the reason. btw i have that cooler with nf-f12 p/p and its not that bad but i need something better

It depends on the CPU and the motherboard. You've probably heard of the silicon lottery.

but if it's the same chip it's not going to be by much.

Yes it can. You are mistaken that they cannot differ by much. Some CPUs of the same model can only hit 4.2, 4.3. While others(of the same model) can hit higher frequencies at the same voltage. Also, please don't yell at me. I'm trying to help you. I will leave you hanging if you don't stop.

I was helping my friend overclock his 8350 to 4.1GHz. After a few days, it just started freaking out.

I always seem to lose the lottery tbh. One of my 670s will do 1250 boost without even batting and eyelid, the other is terrible. My 7970 I got at launch too was utter crap, couldn't get it past 1050mhz. I also had a 6970 Lightning that couldn't even hold its stock 940mhz clock and died about two weeks later hahaha.

Mind you I usually use SLI so there's more than enough power there so I don't have to overclock. The last CPU I had that I left overclocked for the duration was a Athlon XP 2000+. My 8320 is the first CPU I've bought to overclock since those days :D

My 660 Ti has been overclocked to hit 1.2GHz on the GPU. I was thinking of trying to pushing it further because my temps are quite low. How far did you OC your Athlon?

IIRC I got it to match the 2400+ so around 400mhz. Just like what I've done with my 8320 I was happy with getting it to match a higher end more expensive part. Aside from the odd error at post (bad overclock or whatnot) it ran happily like that for nearly two years :)

Godly I wasn't yelling just trying to emphasize the point on this topic and your threat to leave me hanging isn't much of a threat since you haven't provided me with any new information.  Your giving me extreme examples of really weak chips.

Thanks anyways I'm going to close the topic.

You don't get it. These "extreme examples" are real. And there's a chance you could've gotten a bad chip. It's unlikely, but possible. My examples apply to all processors, including of the same model.

I have been reading up on overclocking the FX lineup and it seems that once you are done with basic overclocking, i.e. just upping the multiplier and the voltage, finetuning is what you need to get better results. On OCN they have entire threads for just people with the same chip or same line of chips so that they can share ideas on what helped them the most. From what ive seen, overclocking the NB may help or even lowering or overclocking the ram speeds. With AMD chips these things seems to affect the CPU more than the intel counterparts which really just use unlocked multiplier overclocking for the most part.

We still need to up the voltage on Intel CPUs.

well im using occt and i have set it up to stop at 60 degrees and after 10 mins it stops coz it has reached that temp

guess i didnt win this lottery again
