Okay so i'm from the UK and I've never seen hockey, I was watching the trailer to the new NHL game and I didn't realise fighting was a critical part of the game!

I love the 'I've just punched you in the face but we're still mates' approach! What do you folks think about it?

I think I might start watching hockey!

It kinda makes up for not being able to see the puck on TV, I do like hockey, not enough of it on TV (non sky) in the UK.

Shouldn't this be in the new "Off-topic" section?

OT: I have never seen hockey and I probably never will :)

I dunno, I know linus likes hockey and this is his forum ;)

Could you imagine moving to another team and fighting your previous team mates? Ruthless!

Fighting is very valuable in hockey to regulate the atmosphere. Hockey is a very physical game and tensions build quickly. Fighting is a way to control the atmosphere. After a fight, players have one focus: play hard and win. Personal vendettas are dropped and it truly becomes an intense hockey game.

Now I should mention that this goes through all levels of hockey, not just professional levels.

Now that is why fighting has been left in hockey since pre-helmet days. Now it seems to be for crowd morale more than anything in professional hockey.

I did a research paper on this awhile back. I learnt a lot from interviews of older and current players, spectators, and officials.

I don't play hockey, but love watching it. I'm a red wings fan and you should have seen how brutal their rivalry with the Avalanche was in the 90's and early 2000's. Fighting used to be a huge part of the game, but now it is starting to go down a bit because of all the rules and referee involvement put in place to "protect players".
