Changed the mobo (Z97-AR is so sexy), and cheaper ram that's the same colour and speed but a less obtuse size.

I think I may be taking the plunge and finally buying my first PC. I've been saving for a while, and am pretty sure of the parts I've chosen. Now I'd just like some input from the forum to see if everything is alright.

Here is the pc partpicker list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/7bMdJx

The breakdown is as such:

  • CPU:  Intel Core i7 4790K
  • CPU Cooler:  NZXT Kraken x61
  • Motherboard:  Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2
  • GPU: Asus GeForce 970 Strix
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB)
  • SSD: Crucial MX100 512GB
  • HDD: Western Digital Black Series 1TB
  • PSU: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold
  • Case: NZXT H440 (White)
  • Wireless Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-E x 1 Wi-Fi Adapter

I'd likely be getting everything from NCIX locally, so the total comes to about $1900 CAD.  The only things I'm not too sure about are the CPU Cooler and the motherboard.

Thanks for any input.

The motherboard is heavily overpriced IMO. There are a few things I would change here:

- Change the motherboard to something like an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (Still great and a lot cheaper)

- Drop the cooler to either an NH-D15 (Quieter and more reliable and is damn near on par with the X61 while being substantially cheaper) or Corsair H110/105 (Cheaper but still very good performance)

- Get G.SKILL Ares or Ripjaws memory because I feel Corsair vengeance is overpriced

- Drop the SSD a notch and get a Caviar blue as opposed to black

- Change the H440 since I hear it has significant airflow issues. A better alternative would be the Enthoo Pro, Arc Midi R2 or something similar

- With the money saved on these parts maybe get a GTX 980 G1 gaming or Dual GTX 970. Also in terms of performance the G1 Gaming beats the strix due to the binning. It has a blue LED though that might interfere with a Black/Red color scheme

But is ok.

Sorry probably should have clarified some things initially.

The colour scheme I'm going for is black and white.

I will be doing quite a bit of multitasking for programs, between Autodesk software like Inventor, creative software like Adobe Premiere/Illustrator/Photoshop, and of course gaming.  I'm pretty set as for choosing the case, I really like the aesthetics of it, and temperatures should not be a problem. The PC will be right next to a window, and I like to keep my room quite cold. That being said, I'll definitely consider other motherboards since I don't really know all that much for choosing them.

Thank you! You're right that mobo looks much nicer, same with the ram.

I did a bit more, changed the CPU cooler for something black and white, changed the HDD to something slightly more economical, and changed the psu for something nearly as good but at two-thirds the price.
