Well I kinda just jumped the gun and installed Windows 10 and as it is installing I was thinking what I would have to do to go back to Windows 7 and what files I'll lose going to Windows 10. I know to go back to Windows 7 I'll have to do am install from the disk of windows 7 and will that delete everything? Gosh I'm nervous now, with not the best internet connection downloading all my games would be a hassle and on top of that I have a very heavily modded skyrim and I don't want to go through the hassle of having to download and install every single mod I have. Someone please rest my nerves.

So you're saying I lost everything and I'm screwed?

Yes, unless you have some great recovery software.

Scratch that what option did you choose for installation?

Thanks let me know if I said something useful. Cheers!

not totally screwed. You can create a partition on your drive and move all your personal files (pictures/documents etc..) to this partition but you won't be able to move programs for obv reasons. When reinstalling Windows 7 select the advanced options and just format the partiton windows is on (but not the partition your previously made to hold your files). Once back on the desktop again drag them out and put them in the correct place and remove the partition (remembering to extend your windows one to fill the empty space after).

-EDIT-

wait I just reread your post and it seems as if you reinstalled over your Windows 7 installation? If this is true then yeah you are screwed. But its worth checking if you have a folder in your C: directory called Windows.old, If you do all your old stuff will be in there. and do as a said above.

Quack 🦆

If you used the erase everything option, you will need recovery software, otherwise window.old should have your win 7 install and personal files.

Do not cancel it, Microsoft may not have implemented a fallback operation it is a technical preview.

Warning!!! Windows 10 does not seem to cooperate well with partitions. A friend of mine installed from the same USB I created but on a partitioned drive instead of letting it use the whole thing and his crashes constantly and won't boot up properly 80% of the time. Always install beta operating systems on a secondary drive.

Depends how you installed it. If it was on the same partition at W7, your non-Windows files might still be there unless you wiped it before installing. Not sure if Windows 7 itself is recoverable, though. The old install might have been moved to Windows.old.

So the windows.old file is there. I have all of my data on windows 10 and if I want to restore my old windows via the windows.old file how do I do that and will all of my files carry back over?

I wasn't trolling :).

You will need to grab all the install files and reinstall everything.

Your graphics drivers are most likely not properly supported yet if you are running Nvidia GPUs

Well so far, Im loving this OS. I just installed my drivers for my 770 and games are running fine now and this has been a rather nerveracking experience. I am currently still getting everything setup and currently the only problem with W10 is that applications seem to crash often and not respond but its a beautiful OS and is working much better than I suspected.

Pretty much everything that was put on by windows. Also, if I ever want to, how would I revert back to the windows.old files that are in my drive?

Have you tried running everything in compatibility?

Windows.old is a like an archive, you cannot use it to revert back.  It is simply there so you do not lose anything important.

Since I cannot revert back from windows.old, heres the plan I concocted and Im going to run it over with you to make sure it will work: I am going to best buy after I type this up and Im going to buy a Western Digital 1TB My Drive. When I get the home, I am going to copy my whole steam folder, music, videos, and pictures to the external hard drive via USB 3.0. After that, I am going to format my hard drive an then I am going to install windows 7 fresh. I am then going to copy the necessary folders to get everything up and running. Hopefully this wont take all day and all night, but Im hoping it will work and I am wondering what you think of this plan and if it will work or not.

You will still need to install all of your applications again.
