First Ever Computer Build - Need Advice

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Ok thanks I'll take these RAM, just a maybe dumb question how do you know that the Noctua D15 is going to be over the RAM slots and is not going to stop before it ??

The D15 will cover some of the ram slots. You could probably leave the front fan off but I don't know how much performance you would lose. Or if you have room in your case, you might be able to put the fan on the rear as in the picture below.

This is on a Z77 Sabertooth motherboard:

Different board (MSI Z87)

Hi everyone, I'm planning to build my first computer so I'm a little bit shaky about everything so I'm trying to double check everything to be sure to not mess anything around.

This computer would be for High gaming performance and for 2D/3D Application, the idea behind is to have something that allow me to max-out current games and soon games and be able to keep it for 4/5 years without any major issue. This is also my tool of work so I don't think at first about anything like OC since I don't know anything on it, if I achieve to build it myself without any issue I think I will think about OC after some times ^^

Here is the components I would take, the main one 2xGigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Gaming WindForce 3X, an corei7 4790K with an Asus ROG Swift PG278Q as a screen.

Cooler Master HAF XB EVO
Crucial MX100 - 128 Go
Western Digital WD Blue 3,5" - SATA III 6 Gb/s - 1 To (Caviar)
Asus BC-12D2HT Noir - BlueRay Driver
Intel Core i7 4790K
Asus Z97-PRO (WIFI AC)
Noctua NH-D15
Asus ROG Swift PG278Q - G-Sync
Microsoft Windows 8.1 64 bits (oem)
Corsair AX860 Modulaire - 860W
Crucial Ballistix Sport VLP DDR3 2 x 8 Go PC12800 CAS9
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Gaming WindForce 3X - 4 Go SLI x2

Is it a good build ? Is there any money waste ? Is it without any kind of incompatibility (I've read that there was possible incompatibility between components but didn't really understand how/why except for the obvious one motherboard/CPU, ...) ?

Thanks for your help I'm buying it in France and from France since I'm not sure that it'll be a good idea to use the Amazon export for the safety of the components and I'm not sure it would make me save money. This build would be around 2800€ yeah thanks to ROG Swift which I hope is really this nice screen that I see people said it is ;)

I would recommend a bigger SSD and please use PCPartPicker, makes it easier to see how much money will be spent.

i would suggest a liquid cooler, if you overclock its very good and not over 100Euro, but if you don't want to overclock use the nh-d15 and buy a non-K version of the i7.

and maybe a better ram, i mean everything is the best, so why don't put good ram in it? maybe some vengeance?

why do you spend so much money on a PC? the 7xx series prices dropped, so i would recommend you buying a single gtx 770 and Samsung 840 evo 500GB (that cause if you realy game AAA titles you need so much ssd capacity). You can add a 2nd gpu later

A single GTX 770 isn't going to be much use at 1440p. I would also want more than 2GB Vram.

As far as ive heard 700 gpus are going to be discontinued because of the gtx 980 and 970? I would totally pick a gtx 970 over a 770 basically the 970 is cheap and good for sli. Yes 770 prices dropped but offers less performance

well on low you get quite decent fps, i'd rather donate the money instead of  spending it on such pc shit

If the op is getting a 144Hz 1440p Monitor then there is no point getting a lowish end gpu. The GTX 770 is a good card for 1080p but at this resolution you want something with a bit more power.

Oh Ok I was thinking that the SSD size wasn't going to influence the computer performance that much one you got one and I could always rise it but buying a new one later. PCPartPicker isn't available for FRANCE thats why I didn't use it.

A liquid cooler ? I never build a computer I thought they were hard to put in place ? and costing more than a fan cooling system ?

I was thinking the vengeance was going to cost really much more but from what I'm seeing they cost 30€ more but is it really significative in term of performance ? Corsair Vengenace Red 2x8 Go DDR3 1866Mhz CAS10 10-11-10-30 vs Ballistix Sport DDR3 2x8Go 1600Mhz PC12800 CAS9 9-9-9-24

It won't influence performance, but it's just helpful so you can install more games and stuff on it. It's not a necessity, but it's nice. Just be sure to save your Documents and stuff to your HDD (which will probably be your D: drive).

I did not know PCPartPicker was not avaible in France, but PCPP is just helpful because you can just quickly see how much everything will cost you .

The Noctua D15 in your spec is a very good cooler. It will be quieter than a liquid cooler.

I would go with something like Kingston HyperX Fury ram as it is low profile. It will fit under any air cooler.

You can also get it in other colours.

Nope, an h110 is wayyy better than this. And it isn't nearly as big, it's also easier to mount.

How is the H110 way better ? Go and check out some reviews on the D15, and then you will see how wrong you are. Also the Noctua has a very easy mounting system, probably one of the best for air coolers.

the other 2 thing I would only recommend to your build which is already pretty good is

1- 240gb/250gb/258gb of ssd instead of the 12x one.

2- Seasonic x760 80-plus gold is pretty good if you can get it at a good price :) my x760 can carry my dual titan and 3930k all oc with no problem :)

Live your life like a dream.

Ok I've seen for a Crucial MX100 256 Go

Do you advice for the Seasonic since you think the AX860 is overpowered for the build ?

well on my work/gaming rig which has dual titans and a 3930k all of them are oc as far as I'm temp happy. the seasonic x-760 has been good for a while. had dual 7970 and dual 780 lightning before the titan and still good.

if the prices around where you are buying and the x760 is cheaper (which normally is. then I say why not? :D)

Live your life like a dream.

I think you will struggle with that Ram as it is taller than the Kingston. You can move the front fan up, but I don't think you can move it enough to fit the ram under and to avoid the side panel of the case.

This would go under: http://www.ldlc-pro.com/fiche/PB00162989.html
