Samsung 840 performance degradation

Hi guys, I left my PC at home in August and won't be back till December. I just started reading about the Samsung 840's performance issues and some people are saying that the drive will start slowing down even if it is not plugged in. Does this mean that if I left my computer completely turned off a few months ago, by the time I get back in December my 840 SSD will have become unusable? I haven't started following hardware news again until recently so I'm slightly lost. Thanks!

No. It was only files that hadn't been accessed, and it simply slowed down, it doesn't become unreadable.

There's also already a patch out to fix it.

patch for these issues is coming sometime today, not sure if its out yet but i thought it was only the 840 evo that was effected.

yes if the files have not been accessed they will be affected by the bug (there is a patch out for it today i think)

So the firmware update actually reverses the degradation instead of simply prevent future issues?

afaik it has nothing to do with file's becoming corrupt but simply slowing down transfer rates and such.

Performance degradation isn't the same as corrupt files.

I know, I was just asking if the firmware update will cause the drive to be as fast as new or if it will just prevent it from slowing down even further if it has already degraded a bit.

The update prevents it in the future, and then re-writes everything that's currently on the SSD to sort out the "problems" with old data.

Basically after applying it (can take several hours depending on the amount of data and how slow it became), any performance degradation will be solved.

Well, with the old (original) firmware it's pretty much given that it will degrade performance on old files. So yes, you should probably apply it - but just in case (as with any firmware update) backup your data first.
