Hey guys,

I am having trouble deciding between motherboards. In your opinion, which MB would be more stable when overclocking - Asus X99-A or Asrock Extreme/Killer or other brands?

This system isn't aimed specifically at gaming, most i would say at everything, including video encoding from 4K to lower resolutions, video editing, virtual machine, private server for games, a lot of handbrake use... yeah, i will be pushing it very hard most of the time and for that I will overclock it (5820K).

I am jumping from an i3 Sandy bridge and that thing takes a whole night to scale down a video from 4K to 2K...really i need it to be faster...

Please tell me an mb which will not burn over very high stress, cuz that cpu will be running at past 75% most of the time on overclock for like 4 years no upgrade.

All of them really. Unless you get to extremes very rarely does the MB come into a significant factor on either of Intel's platforms.

I'd pick up a X99S SLI or something.

MSI?

I picked up the MSI X99s Xpower AC along with my 5960x. While I am not LN2 overclocking, usually the higher end stuff has superior quality components and since I'm spending close to 2000$ on CPU / Mobo / RAM alone, I want it to last a while. ^^

[Now if only that fucking store didn't troll me... CPU / Mobo already ready for pickup, RAM said 3-5days... now it says "unknown ordered at supplier... FUUUUUU" ^^]

MSI?

Yep. MSI have done very well of late. There were reports of early X99 boards failing (I think it was Asus ones) but I think that'd be fixed by now.

Do you have any sources for this? RMA experiences are regional anyway.

Well, I picked the Xpower as it is the most feature complete board, dual nics, 128gb ram support and so on [if I already spend 2000$ for this stuff I want it do be fine for a while].

Meh, the store I buy most of my stuff from does exchange the broken stuff right at the counter, may be 20$ more expensive but really, dealing with the RMA departments of most companies, I rather pay that extra 20$.

And again, nothing is worse than ASUS' RMA. Still got a lawsuit running against one of their service partners.

nevermind, didn't see that it wasn't lga-1150

i would so buy that, but i need a blue mobo for around $100. And as much as it pains me, i might go with AsRock, just because they have one for $105 and its blue

My brother has an Alienware MX17R3. Yes, Dell support is horrible. But the ASUS Service partner, that replaced the G73JW/JH's mobo with the wrong one, charged me for it within warranty period, refused to send me back the laptops, [had 3 of them in my household], and is generally made up of a bunch of retards, tops out everything I ever experienced.

Oh and one of them came back with a broken keyboard seperate to the laptop. The otherone would overheat after RMA, and the 3rd came broken out of the box and had to go there for 3 months. Fuck you ASUS. Will never buy anything again that goes anywhere near their service partners. [so anything but screens.]

I guess my experience with ASUS' RMA department wasn't nearly so bad as some of the other folks in here.  I've been pretty happy with the few times that I've had to RMA something.

For your use-case, X99 is a good bet.  If you're planning on running this thing hard, you should go for a conservative overclock.  I would recommend the ASUS X99-A, or really any one of the ASUS X99 boards.  They have a reasonably well reputed VRM that should be able to handle long term usage.  Asrock... how can I put this... has yet to prove itself for long term/high usage cases.  I'll probably get flamed for that statement, but ASUS has a tried and true reputation, and I get the feeling that you're looking for reliability.

You'll also want to get a high quality PSU (check Johnny Guru for recommendations) and a good cooler.

I have owned 6 ASUS motherboards and I've been happy with all of them.  If you get the X99-A, you can be quite confident that it will last you those 4 years.  ASUS makes some fuss about how their VRM is so great, but whether you want to chalk that up to marketing or not is up to you.  The longevity of the VRM is going to be what dictates whether you can maintain an overclock for four years.

I can't speak to Gigabyte's boards, but from what I hear from other happy forum users, they are great boards.
