My new build is here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CgQhYJ

But at the top it says that there is an incompatibility where the AMD Athlon X4 860K isn't compatible with my motherboard.

The motherboard is an FM2/FM2+ Motherboard, and I KNOW the 860k is FM2+.

So this is an error, right?

Yeah just disregard. The CPU is supported. However note that it only works on the newest BIOS, so it may not work out of the box.

What do you mean "may not work out of the box"? If it doesn't, how do I fix it?

If it doesn't come with BIOS version 6 or higher out of the box then the 860K will not work. If that is the case you will need to find an older APU based on Trinity/Richland, update the BIOS, and then the 860K will work.

Are you serious?! I have to get a whole other CPU just to get mine to work?!?

Possibly. If it was something like a 7850K I wouldn't be too worried, but since 860K just came out, the motherboard might not have the brand new compatible BIOS loaded onto it if where ever you buy it from sells you a board that's been on the shelves for a while.

Will the PC at least boot? Because I don't want to risk flashing the BIOS leading to an unbootable PC

If you have an older BIOS then version 6 and you put the 860K in it then it will most likely not boot. You can't flash the BIOS to a board with an unsupported CPU anyways, which is why if it comes with an older BIOS you will have to find some way to temporarily obtain and older APU.

Ok, what about the ASRock FM2A88X Extreme6+? Would that work outside the box?

Same situation with any FM2+ board, as the CPU is very new.

What Kaveri CPU would you say is universal to support all FM2+ board types out of the box?

At this point there is no Kaveri CPU that supports all FM2+ boards out of the box, only APU (7700K/7850K). If you want CPU only with guaranteed FM2+ compatibility then 750K/760K.

Makes sense. Is there really no other way of flashing a BIOS without having to get another CPU?

With an Asus board like the A88X-PRO that has USB BIOS Flashback, it allows you to flash BIOS even with an unsupported CPU or even no CPU at all.

THANK YOU! I'll just trade it out with my board when I go to the store tomorrow.

Ok, once I get that board and install the 860k, do you have any idea how to flash it?

Consult the user manual for details. Essentially the process is

  1. Download the BIOS from the Asus web site onto a USB stick. Rename it if necessary.
  2. Insert the USB stick in the designated USB port on the motherboard's i/o backplane.
  3. Press the USB BIOS Flashback button - location depends on motherboard. (motherboard must be powered, i.e. psu is plugged in and turned on)

Aniallation, I can't describe how thankful I am to be able to express how thankful I am. I'm sorry I was being annoying, this is my 1st PC build if you didn't guess. I doesn't seem like a lot to you but it does to me. THANK YOU!
