The GPU is the card you plug in to your motherboard, yes. VGA is just one of the output ports on that GPU. The GPU does all the work.

VGA is a dated way to refer to the video card. The gpu is the chip in the graphics card.

No. It is just a Graphics Processing unit,m VGA is a display it can ouput, like HDMI or DVI

We call it the graphics card instead of the VGA now--and yeah, the chip (for example the gtx 970) is the gpu while the entire card (for example the gtx 970 strix) would be the graphics card.

VGA was also short hand for referring to the video card back in the day. Some people.. still use it.

I suppose that if you were to apply the term VGA to a video card, it would refer to the card as a whole. The "GPU," strictly speaking, is just the graphics processor chip on the card minus the VRAM, power circuitry, I/O, etc. GK104 on the GTX 770, for example.

 

VGA also refers to the old analog cable standard mentioned earlier.

 

This isn't really something to worry much about. As was said, "VGA" referring to a video card is just an outdated misnomer. It doesn't mean anything's different about the card, just that whoever wrote that doesn't stay current on the jargon.

Nope, VGA is a standard, usually an elongated D with three rows of pins/sockets usually blue .  It was the term (many moons ago) when VGA was bleeding edge to name the whole graphics system VGA.  However although strictly speaking the GPU is the chip on the graphics card, the entire graphics card tends to be called the GPU.

So VGA a type(standard) of graphics.  GPU the actual card.
