Looking for a laptop

Verang

I am looking for a new laptop to replace my 5 year old laptop for college.

budget: $700-1000 USD (would rather spend less but build quality wanted)

Uses: Just normal browsing with light gaming (like League if get back into it) and programming later in the year

Wants: 14' screen or less (willing to go to 15.6' if that is a better option) because I want it to be usable on the small desks here.

dedicated graphics card if possible (nothing powerful needed, something like a 840m)

             thin height if possible

ssd's welcome but I can just replace an hdd with one later if anything

the 3 i've found on newegg that i might consider are the

   MSI GP60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152570

ASUS ROG G56JK (this is open box): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231975R

Lenovo Y40 (ssd version, i've heard that the trackpad is not great but i do like this one a lot): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6862172305

Any other recommendations are gladly accepted.

I have the one with the i5 and would definitely recommend. The only major flaw with it is the stupid TN panel, but that can be pretty easily replaced for around 80 bucks. Also, like in the review Linus did, the tracking on the trackpad is fine, but the clickiness of it can be kind of inconsistent.

Laptop - Lenovo Y50   Keyboard - Corsair K95 RGB Cherry MX Brown   Mouse - Logitech G502 Proteus Core   Mousepad - Razer Firefly

^ Definitely Y40. For your uses the Y50 isn't worth the extra money or size. Keep in mind though that with Lenovo laptops, you can't use the dedicated GPU while on batteries. However games like League will run perfectly fine on Intel HD.

Honestly there's not much of a point to i7 over an i5 in a laptop besides slight clock speed bump and possibly more cache. i3 to i5 gives you Turbo Boost which is a big thing but after that the advantage of spending more on a CPU drops off.

um i5s in laptops are dual cores, i7 comes in quad cores.

Are there no other laptop that you guys would recommend? I do watch a lot of anime and having good viewing angles would be great.

If not then i may just go for the y40 or y50

I might look for a laptop that is thinner. I would also love dedicated mouse buttons.

something of interest is this acer laptop http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314329

i would extend budget a little for something that matches everything i want (ssd, 14' screen or below [15.6' considered], dedicated mouse buttons, thin, and has a dedicated graphics card)

The Lenovo Y series is good. Will definitely vouch for the previous generation. I had a Y400 with a 650m and while the build wasn't exactly great, for the money nothing else was really better. Especially for gaming.

Frankly, other than the GPU (which is reasonably quick for what it is) and the dedicated mouse buttons, a 13" MacBook Pro seems like it would be right up your alley. Thin, great screen, great battery life, reasonably powerful, PCI-e SSD as standard.
