So if my fittings has a leak...

Doing a leak test, I was fortunate enough on my very first build to not have a leak, this one I do. Can I attempt to just tighten the fitting more, or should I take the fitting off and check the o-ring?

if you already tightened it, you should remove it and check if something is wrong with the seal.

Tighten it, if it still leaks, take it off and inspect it..

what fitting? barb, compression, angle rotary?

if it is hemorrhaging, drain and inspect. if it is a drip/drop, a bit more tightening.

Compression, yea it's just a tiny drop like every minute.

Rubber is both heat and time subjective.

"Decades" is unlikely, but possible.

I'd just swap out the rings and/or the loop/components when you rebuild your system.

They should, they are fairly resistant to wear.

depending on what the o-ring is made of, temperature handling, lubrication,

chemical resistance all plays into the longevity of an o-ring.

Check the o-ring first and also, ensure that the tubing used is the same size as the compression's ID and OD. A fitting should really be securely hand tightened and no more, now if you are a weakling you can get away with a little extra turn with a pliers but make sure to cover the fitting with a cloth first.
