Is fast internet far away from exchange possible?

TheJammieDodger

hi

I live 4.5 miles away from my Internet exchange and I have abysmal Internet speed (60-80kb/s). I was just wondering if there was any way to speed it up without building my own exchange

With ADSL no you won't ever get a very good connection over 2 miles, what is your package/service?

Cable or Fibre will get you alot better service if its available in your area.

that is actually really close, you need to ring your service provider sounds like a fault

It's not necessarily ADSL2(+).

I'd start looking for a WISP.

I use to work for WISP support, and out of 100+ companies i supported there was like 1 i would recommend to a friend... Most are terrible and built super badly.

By internet exchange do you mean node, or the actual Internet eXchange Point (the place where all the ISPs run lines to connect their networks)? The distance that you are to the IXP isn't usually a big deal, but the distance that you are away from the node (depending on the medium, cable, fiber, DSL etc) can cause issues.

I currently work for a WISP and would recommend it legitimately to anyone living rurally. Rural DSL is pretty shocking. Current speed we manage to push to everyone is 10/2 Mbps.
