So this is a pretty straight forward request. Which is better? The MSI 770 Gaming or the 7970 Vapor-X. Both are priced at the same point in the UK and I was hoping to know which will perform better after being moderately overclocked, Also, keep in mind that I will be getting a second copy of the selected card in the future (3-4 years) and once in SLI/Crossfire, which will perform better?

Out of those two, i'd personally go with the 7970, if you had to buy now, however if you can fork out some money( or a lot ) for the 780 then that

And in 3-4 years, believe me when i say you wont buy another one to crossfire or sli it lol

After overclocking the hd 7970 will be better.

7970 for sure

7970 it is then. I know it's not relevant to this section, but will the stated 7970 perform better that a reference 7970 once watercooled?

Yeah but in 4 years you wont get another 7970 since a) you wont be able to find one ( probably ), b) the cards which will be out then will perform better than those 2 in crossfire, and c) in 4 years im guessing AMD wont be supporting the 7970 anymore.

Ive said the same thing about my system, ill get one now and in 2-3 years get another one in SLI, never done it :P

And yes a watercooled 7970 will perform better if you overclock it, which if you watercool, you ll be able to overclock more ( if you get a good chip )

Right now, there are driver problems with crossfire, and in some cases, it is even worse to get a second GPU. It really isn't worth it to do crossfire, and you might as well just get a single high powered GPU and be done with it.

slightly misunderstood the question. i was referring to performance difference between a vapor-x 7970 against a reference 7970 after watercooling.

aside from that, looks like there are mixed thoughts. i am leaning towards the 770 but that is once I've seen some more comparisons and reviews.

Still applies, the other one is just overclocked from the factory, so it won't oc that much after, it doesn't have the same headroom that a reference has, so yeah if you overclock it then it could even be better

It totally depends on the games but here is what I have learned. If you plan on running 1x 1080p monitor even with current titles then the MSI 770 with 2GB VRAM will get the job done, but if you plan on running 3x 1080p or 1440 or 1600 then you will benifit from the extra GB or VRAM. The 7970 Vapor-X is a great to OC but it honestly depends on game and resolution....Can you tell us more about what are your plans with this system?
