4 x HD7990s? Is it possible

ravneillal
Go to solution Solved by FluffyNuggets,

I just did some reading on asci miners and the hash rates it does. I think i would be better off investing in a asci miner rather than building a ridiculously expensive system that would probably just do around 5GH/s as opposed to a 50GH/s asci miner.

I'd be lying if I told you I knew anything about this mining stuff lol. If you can make enough money to cover all this by mining then I say do whatever nets you the most money the quickest. Other then that this is way out of my knowledge :p

I am planning to build a bitcoin/litecoin miner.
Do you think is it possible to have 4 (Physical cards) HD7990s on one board i.e Maximus V Extreme using a 3770k?

I know that max gpu's on a board is 4way sli or crossfire but i just wanna know if it is even possible to have 8gpu's on a single board?

This is counted as four way crossfire, since there are basically four GPUs there. What youre talking is eight way crossfire, Ive not seen a board that can do that o.O If there is it wont work with ivy or sandy bridge, since they only support four way crossfire

EDIT: they dont run SLI .. DUHH -.- feel like a noob.. they run crossfire-x theyre radeon.. <_<

i believe it is possible but you have to get a specialized system to do it

what hes talking about isnt sli or xfire, its basically having the cards on the board each running on their to use for the processing power in bitcoin, ive seen systems do it for high end computing and read about one made for brute force hacking so i know its possible

When mining you don't even need the crossfire bridges, it should work fine. You will also need one hell of a power supply.

Don't know of any motherboard with 5-way SLI, let alone 8-way. Also, power requirements may be upwards of 1500-2000W, dangerously close to maxing out, if not exceeding, a single house circuit (1650W).

Figured out a way, what about dual Xenon's on a server grade board? each running two 7990s with a sh** ton of RAM?

So technically it is possible. And as for the psu i think a dual 1200watt should be enough, as for the house circuit hea in Fiji Islands we are using 240V line and i have a dedicated breaker which is 16amps running in my room, so  for the alleged setup it would be enough to handle the load.

You don't use Xfire bridges when mining so that's easy.

You can put seven 7990s on a board, they only need a tiny amount of bandwidth for BTC.

You should look into a real mining farm with that four 7990 monies.

Right, different places have different voltage lines. It's about 110-120V in most places in North America. Would also depend on the circuit breaker. Would also need to factor in limits due to continuous loads (which can be about as low as 80% of the circuit breaker max current).

I can upgrade the line to my room to 20amps or run another 16amp line.

I have my doubts on ASCI miners.

Not really sure if i wanna go down that path.

Well specialised rigs are going to be the future, those 7990's are probably going to end up burning through your wallet in terms of power consumption when the ASIC's arrive.

Maximus V Extreme and liquid cooling the cards. That would fit easily on that mobo.

I will have to do more research on asci miners if i were to consider buying them.

Here's the question, are you going to get the $4,000 back from doing this? And that's just the cost of cards. The cost of other components and electric bill just doesn't seem worth it unless you're getting a lot of money out of it.

Thanks mate. Much appreciate your advice and other users input.

The maximum number of gpus for both nvidia and amd is 4 and one 7990 is 2 gpus so the maximum is 2 of them

He was talking about using them to render which is possible.
