Choosing the correct internet speed

Greetings Guys,

Long story short, I have Time Warner Cable (no other choice in my area) and have the standard internet plan (15Mbps down, 1 up). However, when for example I am watching twitch.tv on high or source quality it buffers from time to time. If my gf starts streaming (hulu, netflix, etc.) it is impossible for me to keep watching anything at high quality without it pausing frequently (twitch or crunchyroll at 1080p).

It gets annoying, and I am wondering if it has to do with my current internet speed. It is important to note that my desktop is using wi-fi via an asus wireless N-USB adapter (lol). I am using this:

and I have the Asus N66U router.

I don't have problems playing games or surfing, but when it comes to streaming while someone else is also doing it that's when I face the slow down.

Any suggestions/ recommendations?

Btw, the next available internet plans offer 20Mbps and 30Mbps.

Thanks!

Alex.

Wtf? then how come it is so slow -_-....I did see an improvement when switching to the 5ghz band (before I was with 2.4), but still makes it hard to keep up in my desktop while other devices are streaming :(.

So you guys think its worthless to upgrade at least a step up?

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

8Mb is plenty to watch 1080p, it will be Time Warner throttling your speed purposefully.

meh, thats only 1MB/s, i would go for more. Fiber preferably, maybe 8 fiber connections.. ahhhhhhhhhh, 1GB a second download...

or at the school i work at they have 3 15Mbps plans and a router that combines them all into one

What I found helped stop my youtube throttling is I spoofed my routers mac address to my PC. So now to time warner it looks like I have a single PC connected. Seemed to help.

You don't need 8 fibre connections to get 1GB/s... A guy from work has 10Gbps (1.2GB/s) to his house on one piece of fibre.

I have Time Warner had you will not be able to stream Twitch while someone else is watching Netflix.  You need minimum 30/5 to do that.
